King Arthur started with the Sword in the Stone. Then upgraded to Excalibur. This is hardly a novel idea.

  • Earliest texts claim so, later texts have Excalibur given by the lady of the lake.

  • Excalibur (Real name "Caliburn") was originally the sword in the stone, drawn by a young Arthur to fulfill the legend of whoever pulled it free would be marked as the true King. The sword was later given to the lady for safe keeping until it was eventually reclaimed. After the death of King Arthur, following the final battle, the sword was taken back to the lake as instructed and tossed in, where the lady took it back and keeps it to this very day.

  • The Arthurian Legends are a collection of various stories that are all different interpretations by different writers. The Sword in the Stone was Excalibur as it was the King's Sword, a story meant to explain how Arthur came to rule the kingdom. Another interpretation is that he acquired the sword from the Lady and that Merlin was more directly involved in such events. The problem is there you have multiple tellings of the same story from different perspectives. There is the British notion of how things went, the Welsh, Scottish and Irish interpretations as well. Just like there is the comparison made between Merlin and Gwydion of the Tuatha De Dannon.

  • Right, and he's known for packing Excalibur. I didn't start with hard light, but I'm known for using it.

  • And you'd be foolish to keep using it when you get a better weapon.
