I read the words "grindy model" and I immediately realized you at least had a good idea of the problem at hand. Bungie is too willfully tossing aside our time investment as an issue. Casuals are left in the dust. At this point, Destiny streamers are forced to play Destiny for an entire work day, and that's not just because it's their full time job. And in some cases, it's not their actual job either. It's because if they didn't play that much daily, they would quickly fall behind the curb so fast and nobody would care for their perspective. People quickly gather to the elitist sects, because they're typically more helpful or at the very least more interesting than watching people grind for levels. But that's the biggest problem with Destiny's endgame. We spend all that time getting there, and then they basically want to keep hitting the reset button and make us do it all over again. Players are getting tired of it. Nobody wants to put up with a never-ending grind. We've spoken out for content to play, not for content that forces the grind all over again. Bungie is doing what they need to do as a company to try and keep people playing for egregious amounts of time, because that's the only hope they seem to believe they have for keeping this game alive for the life expectancy it was meant to have.
