Private matches?
Like seriously, screw the competitive community for a moment. Just think, private matches are a fun and easy way to play against friends. Hell, ever heard of 1v1 me? There are so many casual applications with private matches.
Along with appealing to (myself included) the small competitive community. That's all I ask.
