Not missing out.
Bought it and immediately got it from crucible.
Dismantled the one I got from Xur. I didn't feel excited, I felt this game is retarded.

this game is an experiment in a first-person shooter modeled after mmo's, they still have some learning to do

You have the definition of MMO wrong but Other First person shooters like destiny: Fallout Planetside Warframe (3rd person but they a vry similar) Farcry Etc etc Destiny is no experiment. It's something that could of been amazing. Don't get me wrong the game is fun. But it could of been amazing.
