I still don't understand how groups work :(

So, I started up Destiny again, to see if I'd still want to take the plunge with the Taken King. I'm part of the Eurogamer group/clan. But I'm still in the dark how grouping works in this game. I always have been. I've never been in a Fireteam. When I start a mission, do I need to get lucky and see some others in there? Are story missions always solo? I've started the first Dark Below story mission but get killed each and every time. How can I get together with others? I set my fireteam to public always, are there ways to communicate with others when you want to try a mission together? How? I'm lost and alone...

I might just be a curmudgeonly so-and-so (and it's fair to say I probably am!), but personally I'd say please don't go to the tower and randomly message a bunch of people. Personally, I hate that. I'm usually in the tower for a specific reason and I'm either on my way to do something else specific, or I'm turning stuff in and about to log off. Having a bunch of messages coming at me from people I don't know is a bit annoying! You've not said what console you're playing on. From your profile it looks like you're on PSN, whether that's the PS3 version or the PS4 version I'm not sure though. Loads of people here are on PS4 (including myself). Add us as friends and message us if we're online and you want to do something! Slight tangent, but I see you're currently running a level 25 char, so you're going to want to level up a little ideally so you can get in on some of the really good stuff. Do you have any Strange Coins? They're fairly easy to come by these days and I see your char is currently running all blue gear. If you can get yourself 13 Strange Coins, get logged on this Friday (or Saturday), find Xur in the Tower or the Reef and buy yourself whatever Titan exotic he's selling (a helm is usually the best exotic to have I find, but any Titan exotic will do). As I recall the base light level of exotics is 36 (someone correct me if I'm wrong here!). Depending on what you replace, adding a single exotic armour piece is going to jump you up to the border of level 27 and 28. A higher level means you can get in on harder activities and ups your chance of getting legendary armour pieces which will further boost your level and open the door to more high level activities. If you can get yourself to level 28 get onto the Vanguard Dragon Strike Playlists. They're matchmade, so you don't have to organise a team, and Legendary engrams aren't uncommon as rewards for completing them. Plus you'll nab Strange Coins and Motes of Light too, which are also useful. And Vanguard marks, which can be exchanged for weapons/armour in the tower. Back on topic, we also run weekly organised activities here, as Comp has mentioned. Vault of Glass really needs a 26 or ideally 27 char for normal mode. We tend to run a lot of Hard Mode Vault of Glass (which is where the levelling up I was talking about comes in handy), but I've been chatting with TFU Ichigo (here: https://www.bungie.net/en/Clan/Post/116121/144183116/0/0) about setting up a Normal Mode run for some of the newer members of the group who haven't had a crack at the Vault yet and who are at roughly your char level. If you can get yourself up another level or two in the next couple of weeks, you should definitely get in on that.
