One of the main reasons is probably so new people coming into the game don't feel that they start at a huge disadvantage to others. Just imagine someone starting Destiny right now going into crucible and trying to get into a raid. It's not just the lack of knowledge but the gear gap with weapons will set them back awhile. I see both sides but can't settle on one. I'm a day one player and would not like to see my weapons and armour become obsolete, unfortunately it is a staple for mmo's

But that's true with the game now. A level 1 player is not going to perform as well as a level 34. That's fundamental to the RPG, you build your character over time. TTK is not changing that. What it is doing is invalidating effort. Consider the problem from the other perspective, someone who has not invested in equipment will be in just as good of shape as someone who has. That doesn't provide the "newbie" with any material benefits, because if they don't suddenly adopt an aggressive attitude towards exotics they'll be outstripped again in a few weeks/months by more invested players. But those invested players now have to repeat their effort just to stay current. Picture it this way (a visualization might help), you have a bar graph that sum quality of player gear. There's two colums, a new and and old player. The new is down low, the old is up high. There's a line running across that graph that represents the cap on just how powerful you can become (at or just above the old player's bar). In terms of equipment TTK is not raising the limit. What its doing (by just tweaking numbers, not fundamental player capabilities) is scaling everyone back to effectively zero (obsolete equipment) so in order to return to your old position (top tier) you have to repeat the grind. A new player's potential grind has not be altered (given the fact that what they'll be grinding for is superior year 2 gear, the same as everyone else). Their position in the population has not changed. They are no better off with this expansion than they would have been without planned sandbox obsolescence. But with this scheme old players are continuously set back, not to make the game more fair (since it doesn't affect newbies) but to ensure that no matter when they started they have to keep putting the same intensity playtime in (never mind how utterly futile that may be. Year 3 is also inevitably on the way.) That's Bungie's rampant self-interest speaking. Even though they don't have any way of monetizing how much time you put into the game, they're still going to try to squeeze as much out of you (because they can interpret that as meaning they have a "popular" game.)
