Stop telling me to "move on" from my guns, please. (10 months later, STILL no response from Bungie)

Update- After months of Bungie decidedly ignoring this issue, and this topic specifically, I completely stopped posting almost 2 months ago. However, I still feel like I can't let this discussion fade, just yet, given it's obvious effects on future Destiny games. Everything I felt when writing this so many months ago STILL matters to me- despite the fact that I quit the game 6 months ago... So, I'm pretty sure it's still worth discussing. :P
Bungie Weekly Update 12/04/2014: "In the months to come, your quest to become more powerful will have more avenues that lead to satisfaction. The last thing we wanted was for you to look at your favorite gun or helmet and decide that it had become obsolete. Since the reveal, we’ve read a lot of ideas for how this could have been done better. Your feedback is clear: The time you have invested in your stuff should be respected."

(From Tyson Green via the 8-19 TTK stream, on the topic of Infusion) We're really trying to deliver on people being able to find things that they're excited about and keep them and customize their character
This isn't just about Bungie making design choices that harm the player; it's about them doing it twice, after explicitly stating they wouldn't do it again. On top of that, it even goes against their own, outspoken design goals for TTK, which is absurd. ______________________ (TL;DR at the end) Disclaimer!
I'm very excited to acquire new gear in TTK, and I'm in no way trying to discourage players from "moving on" to new gear. All I'm trying to argue is that players should have the option to do so, on their terms. With that said...
I keep seeing arguments in favor of Bungie's decision to phase out Year 1 weapons, generally based on people's experiences in games of the MMO variety. Now, I understand that from a purely MMO background, players don't see any issue with leaving old gear behind in favor of new, better gear, because that's how MMOs operate. However, Destiny is not an MMO (at least from a combat perspective, which is what I'm basing my arguments on), and shouldn't be treated as such for a number of reasons. Main point-
1. Weapons in Destiny have a much more direct impact on player experience. Weapons in MMOs are little more than "stat sticks," with virtually no impact on gameplay other than increasing a player's DPS abilities; point, click, repeat. Destiny, on the other hand, is an FPS, and as such, choosing a weapon is infinitely more personal and important to players. Even if you only like one class of weapon, there's still a ton of options to sort through; impact, fire rate, stability, perk set- even the aesthetics of a weapon play a part in the overall feel of a weapon. As such, it's a pretty shallow argument to tell players like me to "get used to it" when weapons become obsolete because "that's how MMOs work." This isn't an MMO, and my gun of choice is way more important to my experience than any DPS "stat stick" could ever be (sentimental value notwithstanding, of course).
Secondary point-
2. Destiny's expansions have a bad habit of replacing content, not adding. And they happen MUCH more frequently than any MMO expansion; each new DLC essentially removes old gear from the game, replacing it with "better" gear across the board. Why the hell should I pay for new gear that will be outdated in a few months?! I payed for it, I grinded for it, I upgraded it, and I kept it. This game is built on grinding for gear, and I've accepted that! But why would any sane gamer continue to grind if their efforts are consistently invalidated? What's the point? Especially after the 2.0 patch effectively already balanced Y1 gear to exist alongside Y2 gear in PvP. If the gear is "balanced" enough for PvP, than any claims the "Y1 gear is too powerful" are null and void, and PvE players are getting pissed on for no reason. Everything has been primed and readied to be included into the Y2 ecosystem, yet it's still left behind. The only reason this didn't bother me as much up to this point was because my old gear stayed useful, and became special because of its decreased availability; proof that I was here from the beginning. The idea of playing 'Destiny 3,' and still being able to pull out my Vanilla weapons in future battles is an awesome prospect. It would give weight to all the adventures I've been on, all the awesome feats I've accomplished, and continually validate and distinguish all my efforts to become legend, as they say. :P
EDIT- I didn't touch on this in my initial post, and I absolutely should have;
3. Most console games don't go through major overhauls, because new mechanics and balance choices tend to get implemented in sequels. An "expansion" in WoW is essentially the MMO equivalent of a sequel, not just an add-on. There is no "WoW 2," because Blizzard's "10 year plan" for the game was intended to exist in a single game economy for its entire lifespan. Because of that, it makes more sense for its expansions to overhaul the game in more impactful ways, because they take the place of proper sequels. "Destiny: The Taken King" is not "Destiny 2." As big as it might be, it's still an add-on to Destiny "1," as it were, and I think people should view it as such. If Bungie wants to reset the entire game, and start from scratch, so be it, but they should do that in the next game.
TL;DR: 1. Destiny's weapons are infinitely more meaningful to players than any MMO weapons could ever hope to be, in that they actually have a direct impact on how they play the game; they're more than just stat-increases. 2. And, seeing as how Bungie choses to remove old gear from the loot table with every DLC, thus shrinking gear options, the only way to keep any sort of gear diversity in Destiny, as well as validate all the effort player's put into the game, would be to bring old gear forward, period. ESPECIALLY considering that the 2.0 patch already re-balanced Y1 gear to better match Y2 effectiveness, so what's the hold up? If it's "balanced" enough for PvP, then it's sure as Hell balanced enough for PvE! 3. "Expansions" in MMORPGs typically take the place of traditional sequels, which makes it more understandable that they would bring major overhauls to the game; TTK is definitely an add-on, not a sequel. Destiny will have a proper sequel in the future (confirmed in production), and if Bungie is determined to completely level the playing field for gear, that's fine, but they should do that in the sequel.

  • New guns are good but all the things we grinded for and upgraded we can't keep? I would be ok leaving old guns behind if we had a place to store them so we could keep them.

    • I don't even see how the old weapons are invalidated that much. Sure, armour is outdated because the Light cap rises, but as for weapons... let's just say I like my non-ascended Corrective Measure over half the machine guns I've found in HoW. Attack numbers don't actually matter that much.

        • Whats the point of making the old weapons just as useful as the new ones? If my old weapons are just as useful then why the hell won't bungie just release the entire 10 year game of destiny at once? I already have every single gun and probably the best loadout for every single situation to beat any boss or raid. Just give us all PVE content, theres no point of playing anymore if my gear/weapons are just as useful as the new one right?

i agree its silly to make everything irrelevant but i bet you half way through year two you will have swapped out those weapons for new ones even if the option was available. its just a shame because there will always be the odd gun that would be cool to use

        • You actually bring up some pretty damn good arguments and have reasoning, pretty damn impressive compared to the crap spilling out of most people's mouth haha. I don't think weapon choice will be that big of an issue, but I definitely agree with your second point about how destiny seems to remove content (weapon and armor wise) rather than add more. I really hope bungie finds a better way to address it, but I wouldn't be too surprised if they don't.

        • Very well said! I basically created a similar topic here : https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/144310798/0/0/1 but it didn´t get bumped and got lost. I´m happy that yours is trending and the points you made are great. Essentially I am happy to get new gear but I should be able to use all gear I aquired and even if I´m using a baddass new hand cannon from Omolon I should be able to equip my Word of Crota or Fatebringer for a mission or two just to remember the old good times (and it should be GOOD, not deal 5 damage). And there is a much bigger player-weapon relationship in Destiny than in MMOs (and Destiny is NOT an MMO. It´s a "shared world shooter" that has certain MMO mechanics. That doesn´t mean it´s an MMO. Deal with it people) Maybe you will find some good points in my post that I linked that you could also pin to your post so it´s all together. Anyway thanks for reading and getting our point of view out there. Liking old guns doesn´t automatically mean we will be using them all the time or not looking forward to the new ones. Everyone around here sees everything just black and white

Oh my god you wrote the first novel on this forum that I not only read, bit agree 100% with. Even though before I was indifferent to the coming changes, your statment has changed my opinion and I'm not firmly in your camp. I've been playing since day one and it is a pretty special feeling to pull out my vanilla weapons in a sea of mediocre chocolate.

First off Destiny isn't an MMO. It would be a joke to say it is. If Destiny is comparable to any genre of game it's RPG's and people seem to forget that these MMO's they are comparing Destiny to are MMORPG's. (I recently put a little more thought into this to come up with this.) I can't really agree with you on the stat stick part, while yes the weapons in destiny do vary in stats, perks, and looks. In the current game it's not difficult to have two different guns with the similar perks and stats which just leaves looks (which isn't much of a case in my opinion). The biggest problem I've found throughout my experience with the game is the Devs' way of replacing and trashing old perks so easily. I understand some of them were vastly more powerful than other options and that's probably why they stopped releasing weapons with those perks. Ex: Final Round snipers. Quite honestly they should of got around to just balancing these perks instead of just downright getting rid of them which is one of the biggest grievances of HoW. I don't know what they plan on doing for TTK, but with the current 2.0 patch for weapon balance coming in I could see these perks that people desire could make a come back into the game, but who knows........ Anyways back to the main point of my case is that if the new weapons give us the same viability and perks we have now then it makes sense (at least in an RPG way) that old stuff would get left behind as a new challenge requires better gear. The biggest problem with the game right now is the reward system which I believe creates this level of attachment to a weapon. In most RPG's you can easily craft, buy, or find these weapons of power which is why you don't see people complaining about leaving their enchanted Iron sword for an enchanted steel sword, but in Destiny you have to rely on luck to get a new weapon with the same perks as your old one. The reforging option was a good way to tackle this dilema, but the biggest problem this lead to was the lack of weapon variety. Ex: Shotguns in Crucible. If RNG wasn't as unforgiving as it is I believe the attachment people make to a weapon wouldn't be so strong. Did you play WoW and how much of it did you really play? I'm no vanilla player, but from my experience from WotLK to MoP new players don't have to deal with anything the old players had to put up with. Old raid gear is easily replaced by uncommon gear immediately after an expansion drops and old raids are run for achievement purposes and transmog and no one trying to level up to the current expansion is going to waste time making a pit stop to get raid gear that's easily replaced in a couple levels. Then you can't forget important updates in the expansions that introduce new raids/pvp seasons that introduce new gear. While the best of the best gear will be slightly better than some of the new gear, your old gear is easily replaced by the new top tier items. Ex: I played the entirety of MoP and the last update for that expansion introduced an area that gave armor (from daily quest grinding) better than the initial raid gear from the expansion. You'll easily have 'proof' you've been here from the beginning. Grimoire, emblems, and your memories of this game use to be are all momento's people will have that new players don't have. I've honestly never thought of armor as 'part of my legend' especially since the beginning of Destiny and since my time of playing WoW because everyone in the end game content looked the same. The addition of the ascension system was cool and it definitely helped with giving people the chance to play with armor variety, but I couldn't see this game being enjoyable for the long run if it was viable to keep the same thing for years. I don't play most RPG's more than a few times because once you reach the point of 'top tier' gear and finish the story it doesn't give me anymore incentive to play.

When I heard this news, I stopped playing Destiny. I was under the impression that I could carry all my raid gear through to the sequels. I still haven't got all the gear yet!! Still haven't got a Hawkmoon or a GHorn yet, but by the time I do it'll be nerfed to hell. Its taken me days to accumulate all my gear and now its all worthless. Thankyou bungie, THAAAANKYOOOOOUU. Are they upgrading the Raid missions as well or are they going to be stuck at Lvl 30 and 33? All year one content is now worthless and can't remember the last time I saw a swordbearer roaming the Earth or Moon (I paid for that content dammit). If the new gear is so awesome then it should be able to stand toe to toe with old gear. I like using new gear if it gets the job done. This was not the case for POE gear. The perks for POE gear were shocking, so I just reverted back to vanilla and TDB gear. If I don't like using the gear its nice to know that I can fall back on old faithful vanilla, but no more. Yes, the new weapons look cool, but that doesn't mean they'll perform well. The reason that so many people are annoyed is because they've invested their money and their time all for bungie to turn around and say, "we gonna take all that away from you now and you have to spend £40 to get the upgrade".
