Devil's advocate: Ascension was a bad idea to begin with. No one really wants any of the HoW gear because you could upgrade the gear you already had, and it was much harder to get HoW gear with the stats and perks you wanted. Not only that, but the guns were garbage. Besides, your gear becoming obsolete with a new expansion is nothing new. As a long-time WoW player, this is par for the course. I remember almost immeadiately sheding my T10 raiding epics for quest reward greens when Cataclysm was released, and I don't expect Destiny to be any different. Also, why would you want to keep your old gear? A new expansion means bigger, badder monsters to kill for loot that will be better than anything in Year One. I could see you keeping gear for cosmetic purposes, but beyond that... The point of a game like Destiny is to kill monsters for loot, that you can use to kill bigger monsters for better loot. I'd gladly trade my legendary gear for a chance at something better.

Nobody needs stupid shank burn, so why would they want to force you to waste a perk slot on it? Also, without ascension the only weapons that could reach max damage would be generic vendor weapons and terrible HoW weapons. That's just a terrible, terrible idea. I could see you keeping gear for cosmetic purposes, but beyond that...
I'm quoting out of order here just to point out that this argument is best countered by just reading the first paragraph of your post, namely the part about how HoW gear is awful.
Besides, your gear becoming obsolete with a new expansion is nothing new. As a long-time WoW player, this is par for the course. I remember almost immeadiately sheding my T10 raiding epics for quest reward greens when Cataclysm was released, and I don't expect Destiny to be any different.
As has been stated here many times by myself and others, weapons in WoW and many other RPGs are just little icons you put on to give your character better stats. Weapons in Destiny are functionally different from eachother, even within weapon classes, and even within multiple instances of the same weapon. It's just not the same. Nothing that's ever dropped from a monster will ever be worth using for longer than it takes to get your reward from the next raid, trials, strike, etc.

 • You didn't even read what I wrote, did you? House of Wolves came out, Etheric Light. People upgraded their old stuff and got the new stuff as well. And used the new stuff as well, like the Zero Point Scout Rifle. In fact the video I added above shows that dude using the new Sidearm from HoW, which clearly validates my point. You can have BOTH, why are you fighting us on this subject?
