The only way a ghost can die is if you take out its light and only the darkness can absorb the light out of a ghost

  • No, Petra killed a whole fireteam of guardians with an air strike. They can definitely kill a ghost with purely physical acts.

  • No, the card says the strike killed the guardians, ghosts and all. Thus thoroughly enraging the tower and causing the queen to demote Petra.

"The blasts tore apart the Wolves, the Guardians, and their Ghosts. Three strike teams of guardians gone in an instant. On my command." Check the allies card for petra.

  • Okay thanks but the awoken are armed by the nine so that wasn't a normal air strike like we know them. Maybe the awoken have weaponry of the darkness.

  • I think we should view the ghosts as a sort of sentient light battery that opens doors/hacks stuff while alerting every enemy in a 3 mile radius of your presence. The battery needs to be recharged by being in the presence of light (near the traveller). The further away they are, the more their activities cost the to the point they run out, which is why that one dead ghost found by a dead orbit expedition died, because it was too far from the light for too long. And being in the presence of the darkness slows it's abilities to revive (some darkness slows it down because it can't gather ambient light fast, a lot stops it because it cannot gather enough to revive on its own at all, and even more means it cannot revive even with help, Aka hard mode). Additionally, the hive have an ability to drain it even more than usual, as evidenced in the dark below grimoire cards where eris' fireteam's ghosts slowly lose their light. And finally, if the battery casing is damaged, it loses energy on its own. So a damaged ghost may hemorrhage some light. A destroyed ghost loses all of it.

  • Even the dead ghost grimoire card mentions their shells can be broken.

  • I don't think they're armed by the nine. I don't remember seeing anything like that. They seem to merely have a somewhat tumultuous relationship (since they did something to upset the nine during a recon mission, they gave them skolas as a gift, then the nine had xur release skolas with his own ketch to go start over). The Awoken don't seem to have an affiliation with either the light or dark, as most of their tech seems to be derived from old golden aged ships. Additionally, there's another piece of lore that indicates ghosts are susceptible to damage. Invective's text states, "They made a grab for my ghost. After that, it was a short conversation." Indicating that Ikora (the owner of invective) was having a conversation/argument with a normal person and the person tried to grab/harm her ghost. Considering these bits, the lack of any lore supporting the theory that ghosts are invincible aside from darkness absorbing their light, and the multitude of dead ghosts, I'm going to stick with the general theory that ghost's physical shell can be damaged and destroyed.
