Because they are showing how much they value certain things and comparing that to the value of a video game. Your perspective is that it's not worth it. Mine is that it is worth it. You know what? We are both right. It's a perspective and they are both valid from one persons point of view. I don't think a Porsche is worth 100k but some of my friends do and they buy them. I think they're crazy, but that's only my perspective. Could I buy one? I'm lucky enough to have a good job and could afford one, but I don't think they are worth it so I'm not buying one. Speak with the only power you have, your wallet.
