Ok, even if they lose sales, it won't be by 50%. Let's say there are 10 million people actively playing Destiny. To make it simple I'm going to use dollars (even though there are those of you who are paying much more around the world which I kinda don't find fair).
Even if half the player base were to not buy The Taken King (which won't happen):
5 million x $40 = $200 million
Then we have your suggested price of $20:
10 million (whole player base) x $20 = $200 million
But the fact is that over half the player base will still buy The Taken King. In fact, I'm positive that at least 75% of people will buy it.
7.5 million x $40 = $300 million
And plus, a lot of people are going to also buy the upgrade for the emotes, exotic class items, and shaders.
Even if they're going to lose some players, they're still going to be making more than enough money.
After all, gaming is a luxury and in my opinion, Destiny has been well worth the $95 so far.

Edited by Ultimus: 8/3/2015 8:27:26 AMi do think it is alot i do think they are charging to much for it. I also believe it was just like the first two dlc part of the game originally. All i feel there going to do is farther push fans away untill only core fans are left. They will keep milking them and giving less every expansion untill the series is no longer sought. Granted there making money but this isnt the way to do it. Both companys are giving them self bad rep. I have bought taken king i do plan on playing it for that month until blackops 3 and fallout the month after. Even tho i sayed i wouldnt play anymore after the first expansion. Because how lacking i felt it was. I did quit for 3 months and have started playing again. I will probly still play most expansion untill the second game. because i would like my game to feel complete like it should have been from the start. Bungie and Activision continue to show there colors, Granted they are both business. I WILL NOT SUPPORT the second game. i do still like playing with the people i played regularly with. i would like to finish the games first story(not that there is really any there) but i feel after one more expansion i can endore the price.

Only thing I'm disagreeing with is you saying that they'll be losing sales. Even if they do, it's still going to be very profitable. However I do agree that $40 is kind of expensive for an expansion. $20 is too low compared to what TDB and HoW came with. Maybe $30 would be a more reasonable price, but a lot of people, including myself, will be buying it.

This is a terrible way to run a business. Let them enjoy it whilst it last though.....
