By how they think and base k/d. K/d doesn't have to be high if they think/say/understand things in the right way. K/D can always improve but mentality is something you either get or you don't. (For some maybe eventually) but its about base intelligence. Which is why you can get players who play 10,000 hours and still be worse than a 100 hour dude.
