An open letter to Jon Weisnewski, before you ruin Blink too.
I’m going to go back to putting the finishing touches on the new Subclasses and trying to figure out how I can make Blink less frustrating to fight against. People keep showing up at my desk asking me when I’m going to remove Blink from the game, and I don’t want to do that, so back to the drawing board! -From the desk of Jon Weisnewski
Dear Jon, You've made quite an impression on these forums the last couple of days and I'm not quite sure it was the splash you had intended. While I'm sure there are a lot of Guardians who'd like to have a word with you about that, today I'd like to talk to you about the comment above and problem solving not just in a sandbox, but in the real world as well. Without going too in depth (you or anyone else at Bungie can find my thoughts at any time under the tag #bumpfortruth) I have always posited that when you all decided to allow us to use our own weapons, armor and unique class abilities in PvP, you were creating an experience in which there may occasionally be items or abilities that give advantages in situations. Weapons like Vex and Thorn might be powerful, Arcblade may be destructive, but that the overall depth of the arsenals at our disposal means that we have a multitude of ways to counter anything thrown at us. I'm taking this from a reply I gave to a post in which the OP was upset with Blink users and insinuating they were all scrubs and Blink is broken. It's the kind of post I assume you are referring to in your statement and honestly, by what I've seen so far, the solution you may come up with worries the hell out of me. Not because I use Blink, I don't. But because like Vex, Suros, Thorn, ARs, Black Hammer, etc, etc... I'm worried you're looking for a solution to a problem that may not lay completely in the weapon or ability. So here is something to think about when contemplating problem solving in a sandbox. One of the basic tenets of competition is that, in order to asses the strengths and advantages of an opponent, we must first understand what we ourselves are capable of and where we fall short. Here is my reply to that post:
I get you're frustrated dying to players using Blink, but coming onto the forums and talking shit to everyone who uses it kinda makes you look like a sore loser. If you're willing to take some advice, there's a pretty effective way to counter Blink but to counter it, you have to understand it. While Blink allows the user to teleport forward in place of a jump, it does come with some drawbacks. The biggest consequence and the most relevant to anyone facing it, is that for the distance of the Blink the Hunter/Warlock is essentially blind. The second drawback that is relevant to killing them is that they can't Blink more than twice in a row without hitting a cooldown. The last thing to understand is that 99% of the time someone is using Blink, they're going to be headed forward or up. So what people need to do is think about that and what it means and try to form a strategy to counter it. It's easy to just hop on a forum and say nerf Blink, but look where that thought process has gotten us. So we know that our opponents can Blink and that makes them a bitch to hit, but we also know that they are momentarily Blind, can only Blink twice and are generally headed one of two directions. So what can we do to use that to our advantage? The answer is as simple as one button press. JUMP. We've been doing it since Mario, so we know how it works. Press A and jump into the air. When our enemy Blinks, they do so with the assumption that they are going to teleport, but you are going to be in relatively your same position when they get to the other side. If in that instant they're blind, you jump... "Holy f**k, where'd they go??" You just bogarted their Blink. And by either using jump abilities that allow you to move in the air or by jumping consecutively, even if they Blink again you have the advantage and they're screwed after the second Blink. And by knowing what direction their Blink is taking them, it allows you to equip a close range weapon like a Fusion Rifle to melt them as they reappear or to drop on them with a shotgun. Is it perfect? No. Some maps work better than others. Shores? You'll kill Blinkers for days. Close quarters map like the Anomaly, advantage them. The point is that if people were willing to accept a little personal accountability and ask themselves if they're dying because of a weapon or because they could be better or know a map better or know their class and abilities better, people might find that there are a lot more great weapons and abilities and ways to succeed in this game than they thought. Just something to consider the next time you're in the Crucible.
I hope this is something you read and take to heart Mr. Weisnewski and I hope you never change Blink.

    • What... The... -blam!-... When did Jon post that shit? Just like OP said, it's easy to counter in PVP once you understand it. Especially people like me who have been using it in PVE since launch. I know exactly where these guys are ending up when they blink and they get lit up. My problem with nerfing again is it really messes up our shit hits the fan button in PVE. Warlocks self-res, Titans Bubble, and hunters blink out. My fire team loves the only Hunter they play with save the day because I blink out of trouble and medic my team. Have the guts to stand up to people whining about something that they could learn to counter if they only tried.

Another spot-on post about an all-too-common issue. It seems we run into it at every turn. Round a corner and BAM! Guardian Down. Jump into an encounter and BAM! Guardian Down. You all know what I'm talking about: Nerfs. Too many times this community has had a vocal minority whining and complaining about certain aspects of the game, be they Blink, or Thorn, or The Last Word, or Shotguns, or Final Round Snipers, or Blade Dancers, or Fist of Havoc, or
. The game has an interesting ability to integrate PvE and PvP. You've correctly pointed out that this integration will cause over-powered weapons and abilities to exist (and thrive) in PvP. This can be frustrating, of course, and may sometimes require a bit of a balance. However, it was pointed out (possibly by you) that in other games, this is often accomplished by balancing up, not nerfing the shit out of things. If Blink is truly overpowered, then introduce a method to counter it, don't blunt it to make it easier to counter. It should be noted that 2/3rds of the classes in this game can Blink, which makes me feel like most of those bitching about Blink are either A) Titans, or B) Die-hard Voidwalkers or Gunslingers who refuse to explore their whole class. And no, this isn't to say "Git Gud Scrub", it's to say that it's not particularly unbalanced if anyone can do it. Sure, my Titan can't do it, but my Fist of Havoc wrecks buttholes and my Ward of Dawn blinds my opponents while my shotgun eats their face. All that said, I don't have much trouble with Blink. I'm not a particularly good PvP player, but I find myself dying more to being outmaneuvered, over-confident, or some combination of the two than I ever do to a Blink-Shotgun. For what it's worth, at least. I don't think a nerf to anything is the proper path to take. I share your desire to see Blink remain the same, Lost. I hope Jon understands that much of community shares this opinion.

            • While a valid point, current player demographics and points of interaction (how we casually play destiny) may not facilitate the majority of players to adopt that mentality. Hence the outcry. I agree with the complexity and challenge you want to keep. But under the umbrella, there are not match tutorials and game modes that help players understand anti-blink tactics. Or in-game guilds that can coordinate and teach players varying strategies. Players need structured environments to improve, just like any job, sport, or endeavor. Without those: you cater to the less developed audiences to be fair.

Why not just simply give it a very visible trail so its easier to see were they teleported to. I feel like that would lessen the frustration in fighting it while not crippling the ability which can be a pain to get use to.

              • I don't know about anyone else, but I have been though nerfs that's have nearly ruined games, classes, weapons and armor. Remember exotics are better the legendaries which are better than rare which are better than uncommon which are better then common. Also some people spend a lot of time working on getting good with their chosen abilities and weapons. Why should an ability, weapon or armor (or type there of) be nerfed because I die a lot against it. Understanding the mechanics of how to use abilities and weapons is the best way to fight against it. Just because I find crucible hard at times does not keep me away. I try to pay attention to how each enemy combatant uses their abilities or weapons and figure out how to use that to my advantage. Most players use the same tactics over and over because it works well and that is their mistake. If you think that it's all the weapon or the ability, then that's your mistake. I will say that I am in no way very good at crucible and I do die a lot, but I do get the kill on the guy/gal using Blink, Ghorn, thorn or whatever eventually. In my opinion too many people want stuff handed to them instead of earning it. That's why I don't play WoW any more. Quit your whining, pull up your big boy/girl pants and play the game!

My only 2 problems with blink are: 1) the sticky granades shake off. I know many of you will say it is a myth, but I have seen it happen multiple times. 2) Blink during bladedance. I main a hunter and even I think is really OP..you can cover distances like a full turbo sparrow while being completely invincible. I once close the gap on a sniper from pretty much across the map.

                • Here's another example of the tail wagging the dog. Bungie needs to decide if Destiny is a PvP game or a PvE game. Despite the numerous protests from the PvPer's it's their constant whining that is responsible for the endless stream of nerfs we've had to suffer through for this game. Either jettison PvP from the game or create Crucible only gear.

                • They can tinker the blink jump if they make it more noticable as to where the person went when they teleported. In pvp it's -blam!-ing cheap when people are getting fired at and they're teleporting all over the place to avoid getting shot. It's stupid

                • I've rocketed many blink users that survived. The blink teleport is an issue for radar on small maps. The enemy is no where on the radar. Then they're above your head all of a sudden. Other players don't have this advantage.

                • This is such a good point and perspective and it is something that should be considered when nerfing guns, because if you take your own skill or lack thereof into account, then you consider that if everyone is able to get these weapons then everyone is equal aside from skill. My point is that nerfing weapons serves no purpose other than making guns that we enjoy into guns that are just another gun, and to me, having that great white buffalo out there is a prize that should be worth the chase not something that is really good until people complain about it and then it gets changed! Leave the guns alone when people complain tell them to step up or step aside because this game is not for those who can't adjust to it. It's a game for people who care to put the time in to gain the skill necessary to compete and that's what makes it better then the other games.
