An open letter to Jon Weisnewski, before you ruin Blink too.

While I'm sure there are a lot of Guardians who'd like to have a word with you about that, today I'd like to talk to you about the comment above and problem solving not just in a sandbox, but in the real world as well. Without going too in depth (you or anyone else at Bungie can find my thoughts at any time under the tag #bumpfortruth) I have always posited that when you all decided to allow us to use our own weapons, armor and unique class abilities in PvP, you were creating an experience in which there may occasionally be items or abilities that give advantages in situations. Weapons like Vex and Thorn might be powerful, Arcblade may be destructive, but that the overall depth of the arsenals at our disposal means that we have a multitude of ways to counter anything thrown at us. I'm taking this from a reply I gave to a post in which the OP was upset with Blink users and insinuating they were all scrubs and Blink is broken. It's the kind of post I assume you are referring to in your statement and honestly, by what I've seen so far, the solution you may come up with worries the hell out of me. Not because I use Blink, I don't. But because like Vex, Suros, Thorn, ARs, Black Hammer, etc, etc... I'm worried you're looking for a solution to a problem that may not lay completely in the weapon or ability. So here is something to think about when contemplating problem solving in a sandbox. One of the basic tenets of competition is that, in order to asses the strengths and advantages of an opponent, we must first understand what we ourselves are capable of and where we fall short. It's easy to just hop on a forum and say nerf Blink, but look where that thought process has gotten us. So we know that our opponents can Blink and that makes them a bitch to hit, but we also know that they are momentarily Blind, can only Blink twice and are generally headed one of two directions. So what can we do to use that to our advantage? The answer is as simple as one button press. JUMP. We've been doing it since Mario, so we know how it works. Press A and jump into the air. When our enemy Blinks, they do so with the assumption that they are going to teleport, but you are going to be in relatively your same position when they get to the other side. If in that instant they're blind, you jump... "Holy f**k, where'd they go??" You just bogarted their Blink. And by either using jump abilities that allow you to move in the air or by jumping consecutively, even if they Blink again you have the advantage and they're screwed after the second Blink. And by knowing what direction their Blink is taking them, it allows you to equip a close range weapon like a Fusion Rifle to melt them as they reappear or to drop on them with a shotgun. Is it perfect? No. Some maps work better than others. Shores? You'll kill Blinkers for days. Close quarters map like the Anomaly, advantage them. The point is that if people were willing to accept a little personal accountability and ask themselves if they're dying because of a weapon or because they could be better or know a map better or know their class and abilities better, people might find that there are a lot more great weapons and abilities and ways to succeed in this game than they thought. Just something to consider the next time you're in the Crucible.[/quote] I hope this is something you read and take to heart Mr. Weisnewski and I hope you never change Blink.

    • No. Nerf the piss out of blink. Teleporting laggers is like the #1 most annoying thing possible in video games, so why hand out the ability for everybody to use? Not only is it obnoxious because it let's them teleport behind you, but like amhustler says, it makes you invincible. Grenade stuck to your face? No problem, just use blink and it won't kill you. Rocket about to slam into you? Just use blink and you won't take any damage at all. It's not even all that useful as an actual jump, it's just a way to get cheap kills and survive things you shouldn't be able to.

        • My thoughts on blink regard the fact that anything in the crucible should be counterable, and therefore the user can be held accountable for their own death (within reason.) I feel this falls in line with Thorn killing in 10th's of a second, TLW ADS glitches, and stacked Hawkmoon rounds. If you come around a corner just in time for someone to reappear from a blink and shotgun-labotomize you, there's no counter for that. If you'd arrived earlier maybe, but at that moment there was not a thing you could do. Or you post up at C on exodus and someone blink-shotguns their up the vertical passageways and you're left as a confused pile of gore that another player's now knee-deep in. As a hunter, whom can cloak almost at will, blink is a huge tactical advantage when one of the most common pieces of advice is "pay attention to your radar." However, I haven't the slightest idea how to change it without altering the fundamental reason people take it in the first place. Maybe have a particle effect at the "exit point" of the blink, that's the closest I can come up with that doesn't give a distinct advantage to the opposition. I don't want to see the classes change. But I would like them to be altered a bit. Personally I feel this issue is with classes not being diverse enough, and the possibilities of the separate classes not being fully realized. One of my favorite conversations about Destiny was what I and others thought the third subclasses might be. I'm pretty disappointed they didn't take an opportunity to actually cement some class based mechanics, or squad based even. No real life fireteam would do anything without planning and strategy, I feel like there's a whole realm of possibility that's not being tapped in this game. But that's offtopic and entirely more immersive than "should blink be removed?" And the short answer is no. Blink should be adapted to. But it should also be more [u]adaptable[/u]

        • Good post. But you've posted a good point to the problem: close-quarters maps. I haven't played Destiny for a couple months, but I remember that blink could be frustrating to play against because it has great mobility in close to mid range gameplay, but it was manageable. As a Titan, it takes time to travel from point A to point B. Blink is instant. Both jumps are predictable based on previous movements. So this is where class attributes begin to really take shape. Titan should be able to sustain more damage to compensate for the lack of that mobility. Is this the case? Do attributes really effect gameplay to balance things out depending on different play styles? I don't know. I haven't ran any tests for this. But this is what I would check out. Cuz personally, I think Blink is perfectly fine in it's animation and distance traveled.

            As good as this argument is, you have to remember that we are dealing with a [b]publisher[/b] [i]that is infamous for trying to appease the worst of community minorities.[/i] If you go back and look at Call of Duty Black Ops 2 and Advnaced Warfare, Advanced Warfrae was far more appealing than Black Ops 2. Why? It's because Black Ops 2, per Activision, was catered to a MINUSCULE percentage of players.

            I don't use blink, and I don't think it should be touched. I think less people complain, than the amount of people who actually don't have a problem with it, or know how to counter. We just stay quiet and have fun playing.. I can't believe how bungie addresses issues, catering to the complainers so much.. Before we know it everything in the game will change for the worse, and the main focus is on problems will always be there, not getting taken care of

          • I never use blink but know others need that crutch. The following statement is simply the way I feel this game is going. Please Nerf everything so you can lose so many players that maybe, just maybe you will fix your game bungie. I won't hold my breath.

          • I applaud your level headed argument but blink is too easy to use. Blink makes the tactical advantages of your opponents null and void. I see people all the time blink past corners and over low cover to escape from fights they should lose. I have more of an issue with its defensive capabilities, honestly. How do you track a target that can teleport in any direction? Shotguns have inflamed the blink problem but once that's sorted the offensive utility of blink will be reduced to balanced. Blink saves people from suppers and rockets and bullets. I might think differently if Titans had it too (I have all three)

            I've seen enemies being clearly stuck with magnetic and fusion grenades and survive. I've had teammates during a match say they just blinked out if being stuck by those grenades. I've also seen how easy it is for people to avoid rockets while blinking. Lost Sol, I'm very curious to hear what you have to say about this.

            • Blink is lovely for PvE. I don't like blink as part of a PvP landscape. Then again, I don't like any sort of multi-jump, float, jetpack nonsense in PvP. Halo was trash. I'd love it if blink was chopped from Destiny. That said, it shouldn't be. This game isn't about PvP balance. This game is about PvE, even though there isn't much PvE out there.

            • You made good points, but I feel like you left out a important part of why we don't like blink so much. IT MAKES YOU INVINCIBLE. I've had my fair share of rockets and supers being reduced to a shriveling nothing because a hunter was mid-blink. I could deal with everything else though if they fixed that.
