Why make it seem like it's strange that I don't know him when you don't know him either?

Why question my relationship with the Cod of Conduct when it is obvious I know him better than anyone? Did people question their priests in ancient times and their faint understanding of deity/ies, though they were the closest to understanding Him or them?
