My guess is it's The Nine. They're kind of omniscient, not really part of the darkness or the light. There are a bunch of origin stories, they have never been found, but find those they wish to. One passage says, " ...From the seas of europa, or the hydrocarbon pits or titan." Not sure about the planets aligning or the prison.
