The Darkness Within - Chapter 1 - Bounty Hunter - Part 3

Chapter 1 - Part 2 Day 1, 10:41, Venus I left the room through the only door and found myself in a hallway, where I started searching for the door that lead to the staircase. I could not hear any gunfire from outside. I did not have much time before this building would also be flooded with Fallen. I finally located the staircase, made my way upstairs and came out on the roof. I ran forward, pulled the pin out of the grenade and threw it over the street on the roof with all the Fallen. It was quickly discovered mid-flight. They tried to shoot it down but missed. After the grenade landed on the roof, the Fallen dispersed quickly not to get caught in the explosion. I did not wait any longer for anything to happen, any second more on that roof would mean the ketch might get a lock on me. I hushed back down the stairs to the floor below and stepped into another room that had windows looking out to the street. The moment I arrived at the window I could hear a muffled explosion and metal parts and rocks flying off the roof. The window in front of me cracked. All Fallen had escaped to safety, at least from my grenade. An unsettling rumble could be heard. The Fallen looked around in panic and tried to get a hold on the shaking building, but it was too late. The roof collapsed from the center outwards and the debris fell down to the next floor and on the street below. A group of Dreg got buried next to an abandoned car. All the enemies on the roof had fallen down, only the Servitor hovered down slowly, scanning for me on the opposite roof. “That's my chance...” I grabbed my auto-rifle and opened fire on the Servitor through the broken window. It quickly moved its inner ring in my direction to return fire, a big purple ball of energy zapped through the air and impacted the window, took down a good portion of the adjoining wall and left an unpleasant static in the air. I barely managed to dodge into the next room, but I immediately opened fire again after I had found my footing. The Servitor continued to pursue my location with fire of its own. It's beeping and screeching were sounds that could follow you into your worst nightmares. It was nothing more than a machine, but to the Fallen it was a messenger of God. The God being an even bigger Servitor, of course. This one was rather small, but it still managed to put up quite the fight. Desks and chairs, tables and lamps, doors and walls were among the things that exploded behind me. There was no time to catch a break, I had to end this now. I came to a room that already had a broken wall, I pulled out a second grenade and jumped out of the building yet again, in the direction of the servitor. I pulled the pin and threw the grenade at the servitor mid-air. I was sure it hadn't seen me, but the moment my grenade came closer the Servitors ring focused on me and, upon recognizing the grenade, the whole Servitor vanished in a purple flash. My plan had failed. Everything that happened then seemed like in slow-motion. I was still flying through the air, the purple Servitor appeared to my right, while my grenade flew off to the left, missing its initial target and on its way to street level. If the ring on the machine could be called its eye, then I made eye contact with it for what seemed like an eternity, but was actually only a split-second in reality. “I can play that game, too.” My body twisted around in the air while I reached for my knife and unsheathed it. I felt it again, the energy of the universe, the light, the traveler, all the guardians who had lost their light, the fear of the darkness, I reached out and let it flow over me, consume me, use me, and I used it. I blinked. When the scene appeared before me, I had buried my knife deep into the Servitors center ring, it's purple color slowly fading, giving away a final screech, dying if you wish. I pulled out the knife and used the tumbling Servitor to launch myself away from it. While I fell backwards I could hear Ibuki speaking. “The signal is back online.” The best thing I had heard all day. I pulled up the orbital communication link and called for the sparrow, which started to transmat right in the air next to me immediately. I grabbed the handle and rolled the machine and myself around so I could sit in the saddle, and not a moment too soon. As I was about to hit the ground the sparrows repulsor stopped the fall. I stepped on the pedal and the sudden burst of acceleration almost threw me off. I held on to the controls tightly, when I heard a loud explosion behind me. I looked back and saw several Fallen flying through the air. “Not the worst grenade I ever missed...” I continued to speed around the corner and put some distance between me and the mess I made, before I got an update from Ibuki. “We have at least one Fallen ketch in pursuit.” “Of course we do.” To be continued...
