Trials should not be a prerequisite. You get enough special stuff including an exotic emblem from doing it. The year 1 emblem is a good well rounded reward for being successful in the game and won't be achieved by everyone. Besides as you said...there is a lot of shadiness going on in trials with cheating. It has gotten worse
