Also, what conflict did the Precursors and Forerunners have that caused a war between them?

The Precursors determined the Forerunners were not worthy of wielding the Mantle. The Forerunners, refusing to believe this (or out of fear of being destroyed due to obsolescence [or both]), rose up and attacked the Precursors.
