United States Intercepts Russian Bombers
On July 4th, two pairs of Russian Tupolev Tu-95 bombers approached the US West coast, causing the Air Force to scramble to intercept the planes before they breached US airspace. Fox News reports that the first incident occurred at 10:30 am ET off the coast of Alaska, when NORAD identified the Russian planes and two F-22s hurried to intercept them. Another incident occurred at 11 am ET off the coast of central California, and was responded to by two F-15s. The Russian bombers they intercepted are capable of carrying nuclear weapons, but sources do not indicate whether or not they were armed. The Air Force intercepted the bombers before they entered America's sovereign air space, which extends 12 miles out from the coast, but the presence of the bombers is an ominous sign during the heightened tensions between Russia and the US. As retired Air Force Lt. Gen. Thomas McInerney, who formerly commanded the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) told the Washington Free Beacon:“It’s becoming very obvious that Putin is testing Obama and his national security team.” Since the start of the crisis in Ukraine, Russia has flown increasingly aggressive aircraft missions throughout Europe and the Pacific. From May 2014 to September 2014, the US intercepted Russian bombers over Guam and off the coast of California and Alaska. In September, two Russian aircraft carried out a mock cruise missile attack on the US.
tl;dr two Tupolev Tu-95 bombers were found nearing United States airspace and were intercepted. The last thing this world needs is a third world war instigated by classic rivals. Thoughts? Edit: Yes, I understand Fox News isn't the majority's new source here in Offtopic. However, I don't understand why a deal of the replies are zooming in on such an irrelevant detail. I don't have time to list multiple sources to cater to your own biases.

Calm down there buddy, this is by no means the first time this has happened, in fact it likely happens way more often then you think. Bigger countries enjoy poking at one another, it is just Russia saying that they can get to the U.S. and they arent afraid to poke. There are constantly times where boats and plans are run off of other countries territories, it will not cause any kind of war. Russia is also not about to drop any bombs, we are at a point where such a war would not gain either side anything, and Russian leaders may be a little crazy, but they arent that crazy.

    • The bombers normally wave to the fighter pilots and everyone goes on with their day.
Russian bombers crossed into the U.S. Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) — a transition area around U.S. airspace where America does not have sovereignty but keeps closely monitors — at least 10 times in 2014, twice the average of five incursions a year since 2006 according to NORAD. They have also intruded the airspace buffer zones of NATO allies overseas including Ireland, Sweden and the Netherlands. U.S. defense and congressional officials attribute the increase in flights to rising tensions between Washington and Moscow since the annexation of the Crimean Peninsula.
Why is this news now? I'll tell ya why. Rabble rousing and bullshit political rhetoric designed to distract from real issues.
the rest of the article is worth a read as well.
• Stuff like this happened all the time during the cold war. It got to the point where the pilots would display porno mags in their cockpits (insert pun here) so that the others could see them.

            • It's probably just Russian pilots using too much of their vodka ration and getting lost. Our F-16s are their designated drivers.

                • Dude, this isnt new. Been happening for months. It just isnt reported on 90% of the time because its routine now. Only reason this was reported by news outlets (by the way, do yourself a favor and stay away from fox news. You might catch their prejudices) is because it was on the 4th of july

                • This happens a lot more than you can imagine. It is Russia testing the US on how fast the respond to international waters attack. No fighter jets along side the plane indicates it's still not an act of war. This made headlines bc it was on the fourth of july. The US did am outstanding job reacting to this.

A year and a half ago I bought Rosetta Stone Russian and Chinese so when they team up and invade you people in the United States and probably Canada as a strategic position and conquer us I can just go about my life in the new Ruski-Chinese Great North and I'd advise you all do the same.

                      • Was going to immediately dismiss this because lolfoxnews, but several other news sources are reporting this as well. Here's a story not cherry picking facts as to what NORAD reported: http://abcnews.go.com/International/russian-bombers-fly-us-july-4th/story?id=32256983 Yes, ABC can be just as bad, too, but this article at least tells you the bombers could have been anywhere from 12-200 miles away from airspace. And that this also happened last year. That's why it's always good to read several news sources about any kind of story, IMO. Be informed. And I'd guarantee the USA does the same thing.

                      • TU-95 intercepts are nothing new, they are just Russia trying to see how fast U.S response time is or what intercepts them. This has been essentially going on since 1960, and has become so frequent the pilots wave at the Boar pilots. Now, if the TU-95 was being escorted by fighters, that would be quiet a problem, armed or not. What we are seeing from Russia now is chest-thumbing to the 10th degree, and the U.S is doing a fine job making sure that Russia's Air/Naval stunts don't turn hot. Granted on land I can't say the same.
