I'd never given too much thought to my gender before having a transgender friend. The fact is, I don't really "identify" as anything. Most people do. Most people I talk to have this strong sense of self, this sort of.... Investment? That's the closest word I can think of. They have this sory of investment in their gender as a part of their self, their personhood. I do not. If I woke up tomorrow in a body of the opposite sex, my biggest worry would not be the change itself, but the influence it would have on my relationships with other people. In short, I do not care.
