I hope you read this op because i would like your opinion on my suggestion.
Why does everyone seem to think that thorn needs to be nerfed to the ground? Completely removing the DoT is extremely stupid. One simple change like removing the DoT when the thorn user dies would make the weapon much less frustrating to be up against and it would add a clear counter to the weapon. "If you as a thorn user dies before your target, you wont get the kill" simple. I think that handcannons are a little bit to strong right now so why not up the recoil a bit on all handcannons. This would make them a more skillfull weapon to use and it would take away their long range capabilities that they shouldnt have.
The overall nerf to handcannons coupled with the small nerf to thorn should be enough to make it equal to other exotics without making it a peashooter.

Honestly I think that the #1 factor in all nerf posts is map awareness and #2 is weapon availability. With no private crucible matches, there is no way for anyone to learn maps before actually facing online competition and so people are at a huge disadvantage going in. Only instead of realizing that they're getting destroyed because their opponents are intimately familiar with every map and where their weapons of choice are most effective, they blame the weapons instead of their lack of experience. The other factor is that a lot of people don't think the can ever get Thorn themselves because of the bounty and so they resent the fact that anyone else can use it. Last but not least, dying to the DoT infuriates people because they can't shoot back. No different that getting sniped, but again anyone can get a sniper rifle. The exclusivity of Thorn is the difference.

As i said earlier just a very small nerf is going to be needed or red death will be the new thing to hate on in the balanceforums. And as you said, the requirments for people to have thorn is that they are decent in the crucible and that means alot of good and great players have it. But dont you agree with that handcannons have a tad to much range? Edit: just want to point out that your post is more reasonable than almost every other but i think me might have to agree to disagree on this one :/
