Ok I'm going with the stranger. Took my life from death. Lore hints that the stranger exists in somewhat of a time paradox. Death was the alternative. Some suggestions also that the stranger was a vessel for one of Dr. Shim colleagues. Implying that consciousness is preserved in the exo as interim, but the physical body remains immobile.
