If motivation counts for anything, then this guy is playing for spite more than any kind of "good competitive spirit."

I'd say playing to win and playing to try and be better than others is "good competitive spirit." But it's personally opinion really, I see no issue with it.

Eh. There's a distinction between playing for your own wins and then playing simply to deny others theirs, and the original comment to which you've replied makes that clear enough. Dress it up however you want, though. Not as if it matters to you, to me, or even to him.
