Ships were originally supposed to drop you off to members of your fire team on patrol.
Thorn used to be able to damage ships

You can still damage ships. Although you can only blow their guns up

No not damaging the guns you could actually damage the ship itself thorn damage would thorn damage would tick off of the body of the ship. Then they patched it out

Ohh yeah but not just with thorn though. Back then you could damage it with any other gun. Referencing to thorn only shows how the ship turns green when shot. Linking it how you can previously damage the ship. Otherwise bungie took the idea from halo on how we can blow ships up
