Great post and I totally agree with you. And here's the thing, I actually am one of the people who can play a lot each day, and I still haven't seen a single etheric light drop, because I'm not level 34 yet to get it from PoE, nor do I have any desire to play ToO. So that means, until my friends and I are level 34, the only method of getting it is nightfalls and iron banner. The issue with that is that the drop rate from Nightfalls is abysmally low, so low in fact that myself and an alarming number of people are 9 nightfalls into HoW and still haven't seen a single EL drop. And even when IB comes around, you'll only be able to buy two of them per character, and frankly, I'm not grinding out to rank 5 on three characters, even with the new reputation boost. So that means I can reliably get 2 EL per month, whereas people who can grind the highest levels of PoE and play ToO all weekend have so much of it that they literally don't know what to spend it on. And when you get right down to it, this DLC sucks for solo players. If you're not the kind of person who can easily organize teams of people to do all the grinding with you, you are just straight up out of luck. The two main methods of getting EL require pre-made teams. With this DLC, Bungie took one of Destiny's greatest weaknesses (a lack of matchmaking for end-game content) and only made it worse. For a company that practically invented matchmaking on consoles, they sure do seem to be terrified of putting it in Destiny. Honestly, let's just cut the bull crap. EL should be a guaranteed drop from nightfalls, in addition to whatever your other reward is, and it should also drop from level 32 PoE. And it should start having a chance to drop from crucible and dragon strikes, as well as level 28 PoE. Now I know there will be plenty of snotty little elitists who will claim that that would make EL too easy to get, and that you shouldn't be able to get max everything in the first couple weeks (funny though that despite this argument they were all level 34 on day 2). But I want them all to ask themselves this: were ascendant materials ever this difficult to obtain? It's not like you HAD to play VoG to get ANY ascendant materials at all. I've never set foot in that raid, yet I got all the ascendant materials I could ever want from nightfalls, daily heroics, public events, faction packages, engrams, and dismantled legendaries. They were NEVER exclusive to end-game content. EL shouldn't be either. The whole point of the new ascension system was to simplify the process, remove the grind, and allow players to equip any armor that had either the look or the perks they wanted, rather than being forced to use one set of end-game gear just to be max level. Instead they only added even more grind that actually requires you to have and use 3 characters a week to ascend at any reasonable rate, added yet another barrier to entry for end-game activities, and are forcing some players to use a set of armor that comically enough has a 100% pure strength roll. It's just a mess right now.

  • You seem to be forgetting that ya, you didn't need to beat the vog to get ascended materials, but you'd never reach max level either without doing it. Not to mention it took a minimum of 18 ascended materials to upgrade a single piece of gear. It only takes 1 etheric light lol. Be patient, you'll get some eventually!

  • You would have a point, if it wasn't for the fact that, in previous seasons of this game, the only way to be max level was to wear raid gear. The whole point of EL was to fix that problem, so that you can wear any set of legendary armor and still be max level. And lets be honest, I want to ascend my vendor gear, rather than just wear the set of PoE armor I get after 4 weeks. Because vendor armor has better/more relevant perks, and so far all PoE armor that has been sold has a pure stregth stat roll, which sucks. My vendor armor is just better in every way, so it needs to be ascended. And then there's the issue of weapons. During the first two seasons, vendor weapons were just as powerful as raid weapons. They all had the same attack rating. So if you could buy legendary weapons from vendors, you were set power-wise. You didn't need to play the raid to get the most powerful weapons. You could upgrade them just collecting materials in the ways I previously mentioned. That's not so anymore. All the new content has clearly been scaled for 365 attack weapons, so all my weapons that have 331 attack do noticeably less damage than they used to. In roc strikes, a single shot from my 331 Red Hand IX would kill a vandal in one headshot. It takes two headshots in the dragon playlist. In level 30 nightfalls with arc burn, my 331 arc LDR 5001 would kill a reaver vandal with a single headshot, and a reaver captain with two. In level 32 nightfalls, it takes an additional shot for each. I need to ascend these weapons, and I just can't. I know I'll get some eventually, but not enough. It's going to be such a slow process collecting it all without relentless grinding that I may not even have everything ascended before the next big expansion rolls around.

  • That fact that I just wrote? lol You make a good point with the weapons though. And I think the point of the poe gear is to give you an advantage in poe so it's easier to get the etheric light you need to level up the gear you actually want :p. If you've noticed they all have perks specifically for poe. I really don't understand the need for all that strength either though lol. It's supposed to take time to max out your character in mmo's, which is the type of platform bungie's going for.

  • I can understand. W/out it it takes twice as long to do NF. I can't get invites to ToO b/c I'm not 34... It is what it is. I'll have 4 after doing IB but I have to choose wisely on what to upgrade

  • If E-Light was readily available, it would become the new ascendant mats. Have a ton in the vault after a couple weeks with nothing to spend them on. Perhaps a temp solution is to buy 3 pieces if armor from Variks (armor core guaranteed from PoE 32) and one exotic shard for ur exotic armor. Boom 34. Now its much easier to do PoE 34 and 35 (which have guaranteed E-Light), plus keep pace with 34s in ToO. Three weeks to max level is a blessing compared to the grind that was Crota and 32. Its sad when u beat Crota hoping for that big drop of 6-9 shards.

Right, but how would that be a bad thing? Did anyone ever seriously complain that ascendant materials were too plentiful? I can understand not really caring about them when you couldn't do anything with them and didn't need any more, but that problem has been fixed with the Speaker. Etheric light could be the same way. If you've got too much, just trade it in for motes or glimmer.
