Why didnt the prophets wait until after the destruction of earth to betray the elites? They were so close to killing humanity but they kinda ruined their chance
Also what happens to the prophets race?

It was a now or never moment for Truth. Once Regret was killed, he had incentive to change the guard, pushing his plans into motion. Such a move did not sit well with the Elites. Truth bypassed the High Council with this move, and fearing that he would be impeached, had them slaughtered.
