I don't think the universe is screwed if we are the oldest. Wisdom must be attained through experience. Our long time descendents will benefit from the harsh lessons that our generations are learning the hard way. In our current state, I agree with you, we are poor teachers. But 200-1000 years from now or maybe even 1 million years from now we could be excellent teachers.
