Etheric Light is too rare, and it kills the desire to play.

For once, I have to agree with IGN(orant). I understand why Bungie made Etheric Light so rare, and it's a two-fold reason. 1) They didn't want everyone hitting 34 in the first week. (Understandable) 2) The rarity is a delicate balance. Just rare enough that it entices you to play more, but not so rare that it seems to be like a second job in order to get even one piece of Etheric Light. Unfortunately (as with the rest of the game until present), Bungie has no idea about how to properly balance the grind vs. reward ratio. They've hit the latter part of point 2. They've made the Etheric Light so rare that it is far too difficult and offered in far too little activities with far too little of a drop chance. They've made it such a chore to get, that for many people it is killing the drive to play now. There's plenty of people in my situation. I've played for two weeks now and still haven't seen a single piece of Etheric Light drop. Now; there are plenty of people who have three 34's, all weapons upgraded, and Etheric Light to spare. But Bungie missed the target audience on this one (unless their target audience is between the ages of 12-16, out of school with 16 spare hours to grind out that much Light...). Most people don't have the 10-12 hours at a pop to grind out Etheric Light to get all of their equipment upgraded in a week. Hell, most people don't even have that kind of free time on the weekends. A possible fix would be to keep the guaranteed Etheric Light "gift" of the 34 and 35 Prison of Elders, but add in a drop chance for the small chests at the end of the 28 and 32 Prison runs. Increase the chance for a drop for the Nightfall and the Crucible (hell, add in a chance for a drop in the Crucible) as well as the Iron Banner once it starts up again. An increase of 10, 15, or even 20 percent along with the additional places to get it would make the grind much less agonizing overall, and would have the added effect of making people want to play more than they do now. Making the Etheric Light the carrot at the end of the stick is one thing. But you've got to use a shorter stick. nobody will want the carrot if they can't even see it at the end of the stick. As it stands right now, there's nothing in sight to chase after, and it just kills the desire to play. Edit 1 (of what will probably be the first of several edits...): I fully know where to currently get Etheric Light, that's not the issue. the issue is the time it takes to get even one piece. Most people only have 2-3 hours to play per night. Therefore, most people find it very difficult to "do everything in all characters per week" like you kids on summer break are getting more than twelve hours to accomplish. Edit 2: PvP isn't everyone's strong-suit, nor is so easy as "git gud skrub". Those of you who say "it's a cakewalk to go 9-0 in the trials and get 3 EL per character per week" should probably quit talking. You're only making yourselves look ignorant, not like the PvP-gods you think you are. Edit 3: ironBill posted this, and he clarifies the intent of this post nicely.
FWIW, I couldn't care less about getting through ToO. Really, I'm finding I don't care about hitting 34 on all characters either. No point to it. Just so we know who we both are. The OP is talking about play balance, and whether or not Bungie is hitting their market, which I happen to find is a great point. Who IS the demographic? Are they trying for a very select subset of skills to reward this time around? Sure seems that way. Good PvP players are strutting around like they invented fire... happy for 'em too I guess, but if that's all this DLC is intended to give us, my question follows - is that all there is to this?
Edit 4: Calling me a "scrub" doesn't do anything as I really don't care. All you're doing by slinging names like that is highlighting the lack of strength in your argument. Edit 5: pablogordon had another great idea. I've quoted it here to give it some love.
There should have been an exchange rate at the speaker for Etheric light. Baffling really that it's not there. Make it really expensive. The most expensive thing in the game currently is that ship from Petra at what, 17.5k glimmer? Make the Etheric light cost that plus one each of the radiants, and ten each of the ascendants, and some coins and motes for good measure. The speaker exchange was a very good step in the right direction to sinking some currencies, especially Friday when Xur sold the helm engrams and now that most everyone has a couple few weapons they want to re-roll. Why not just add the Etheric light? If we are really honest, the point isn't just hitting max anymore (and thankfully so) but putting together a setup with both the perks and looks that suit your play style!
Edit 6: And, here's a link for why the PoE loot system is broken in general, but parallels well with the rarity of Ethereal Light. http://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2015/05/28/destinys-prison-of-elders-has-a-serious-loot-problem/?utm_campaign=yahootix&partner=yahootix Edit 7: FatChubbE offers a very good breakdown of what the responsible adult Gamer deals with in trying to overcome the base design of this DLC. It is an accurate description, and props go to him for it.
The adults I play this game with aren't always on. Three are full time Grad students with jobs, two are parents with wives and kids. My son plays between school and football practice and games when he's not doing chores or homework. The full time gamers in my clan have all partnered up, so getting help from them is difficult. The "it's easy" comments applies only to those with spare time. We did one nightfall and one 32 prison of elders. That's all we had time for. Don't get me wrong, the etheric light is there. It's obtainable. But it's not obtainable "easy". Easy when applied to time spent obtaining does not bode well for the working/school demographic. It applies only to destiny players who play destiny for hours on end every day. To put it into perspective we did (two) ToO matches. that's right 2. We were not in control of the time. With loading, and 5 round matches, two matches took an hour. If you do 8 and win flawlessly without the other team winning a single point, 3 hours at least grinding for an etheric light. If you add a 34 or 35 prison of elders and you're a super stud team that's another 2 hours with loading, game time, running back to the airlock. And 2 hours is giving you the benefit of the doubt that you're really really good. If you're average, add at least another hour or two. So the argument that it's "easy" is a matter of perspective. Easy as far as skill level? Or easy as a matter of "I got all the time I need to play?" Either way, getting etheric light takes more time than any other currency we've been offered thus far. That's just how it is. People took days off to play this. Which kind of gives you an idea of the commitment to time you have to invest to receive these "easy" rewards.
Edit 8: IIFormer GamerII also has a great take on the time sink necessary and the base design of these DLC.
You are without a doubt correct when it comes to grinding through the same content three times over in Destiny, and the annoyances, redundancy, sheer boredom, and time consumption that comes along with it. After playing through the base game and TDB I've come to realize that destiny simply isn't a game that can be played causally, and if you attempt to do so you should be prepared to put yourself at an extreme disadvantage. This was my main reason for intentionally skipping out on HoW, because I knew that the never ending grind would continue. If you have a lot of spare time on your hands, Destiny is a great game to play with clan mates. But truth be told you cannot simply play destiny in a casual manner such as battlefield or call of duty, without hindering your progression dramatically and being seen as a "slacker," "leech," or a "freeloader." Destiny's new loot looks nice, but I just can't take the grind anymore.
Edit 9: To all the people telling us that not everyone should be able to get to end-game content, or that parts of the game should be locked except for the "hardcore" crowd: So having entire portions of the game locked out to a player simply for no other reason than Bungie feeling the need to promote elitist alienation of their player base... is ok? The only thing more wrong than Bungie's "philosophy" are the people who jump at any chance to support it.

  • It's kind of rare if you don't play pvp that much. I won't play trials at all so there goes that idea. I don't mind playing crucible or iron banner though. To me I find them more enjoyable however the PVE is what I mainly play for and with 3 characters at level 33(Titan is at 34 actually) that's only 3 a week for me guaranteed unless I get light drops in a nightfall. I would include the light from the 35 but I'm not playing that at 33 unless I have 2 34s with me that know what to do and won't mind carrying me through. If you're under leveled and not relying on pvp like me then it will be a minute to get the light. What helps is to do the 32 poe every week to get the armor cores and trade them for armor pieces from variks.

Since I can't edit my OP anymore due to character limits... Edit 10: Once my wife lays down, I get 2-3 hours. Cant fit in a 34 Prison in that amount of time, definitely can't get in a 35 Prison. Trials of Osiris is not happening in those 2-3 as getting 5-8 wins is not going to happen (because not everyone likes or is good at PvP), and finding two other people who want to grind out the Trials with a 33 is laughable to even try. Can't find a group to assist or carry me through as no one on LFG wants a 33 along even with a 365 Gjallarhorn and Patience & Time. Everyone only invites/accepts 34's anymore. So, Bungie; now that you -blam!-sticks have sponsored and instituted a deep system of elitism and alienation amongst your players, how in the name of the -blam!-ing Gods do you expect me to reach 34? Or even upgrade any of my Legendary weapons? I'd love an answer as to how this is going to happen, Bungie. Seriously, you need to tell me how to do this in light of the experience that you've left me in (the one I described above), because I can't figure it out.

I've used so many etherics upgrading stuff there's no need for them anymore. And I still have 15 in the bank. They aren't rare at all. Between trials of Osiris and poe 34/35. Ur getting over 12 a week easy.. and this spare time shit is a joke. I have a wife and kids, active duty usaf e5. Gym 5 days a week. I still have time to play. 24 hours in a day. the body is fine with 6 hours of sleep. Find time. You people crying about time are the same crowd saying you don't have time to workout because of family or work. You're just lazy

                • I had two 34s by the bed of the day on launch. Not sure what you are talking about. You can easily get through prison of elders 32 in that time and each week he gives you a different piece of armor. I haven't even played trials yet and have 3 34s.

I think you're missing something. Every week you have a shot at 5 Etheric Light, two Armor Cores, two Weapon Cores and one 42 light level Trials Armor. All of this is a guaranteed item PER CHARACTER. Not only could you hit level 34 week one on all characters, you could also have four Etheric Light left over. All of these are guaranteed drops. Yes, GUARANTEED, if you can earn them. Okay, you personally couldn't get there. Great players did because Bungie built the expansion accordingly. Now, let's take a look at getting to 30 in VoG or 32 in the Dark Below. You could only do so by raiding. Well, Iron Banner, too, but that was inconsistent and had time constraints. With the raids, you had to achieve a minimum level to join, hope and pray for armor drops, then hope an pray that you had enough mats to upgrade that armor, and across all three characters. You literally did not have the ability to hit 30 or 32 on week one, two or three, unless you were extremely lucky with RNG. I had two 33's and a 34 week one of HoW. Now I have three 34's and multiple 365 weapons on week two. I played Trials once, so that wasn't how I got there. The gist of this post is: it all takes time. This game is rewarding exceptional players, while giving the marginal players a chance at making some progress. Etheric Light should stay how it is or this game will be a total bust by becoming too easy. Take your time and enjoy the challenge. Edit: I forgot to mention that they added Etheric Light to the Nightfall (unlike the promised Radiant mats) and you can get Etheric Light from Iron Banner. Essentially, if you were extremely lucky, this week you can get 8 Etheric light per characters. Highly unlikely, but you are guaranteed 7. That's 21 - 24 Etheric Light...

                            • You act like this game should be geared towards only pve. PvP took a back seat pre dlc with horrible drops and something that came around once a month. Finally get something for PvP and u have to go and crap on it? Learn how to play PvP and get etheric light that way. Trials is the best game mode Destiny has. It's a nice rush and just overall very fun!

                              • It all honesty it does not matter; this is why it doesn't matter. The loot system is broken and skewed towards the PVP side of the game and the PoE is forgotten, now was a step forward giving us one key a week. Still not going to be good enough to bring us back time and again. I also believe with in a month or so ToO popularity will fall off too when the gear is all gotten and new shine is worn off. Let's be honest the best part of the game right now is the hunt for the wanted. I myself enjoy doing bounties. The PoE is a joke when it comes to content. The final bosses are either way to difficult or to easy. With victory the rewards aren't that good. Take going flawless in ToO, and a trip to the lighthouse did make the time worth it. Ask your self if you invested would be worth it if all you got was a few strange coins and a not of light. That what I got from chest on a 34 completion the 2!hours that it took felt like a waste. I am not saying I need a exotic or anything every time. And has far has etheric light goes, on the PoE side there is not enough chances to get it. Yes I know Lvl 34 and 35 give one, but with a 2 to 3 hour time to get it done is it worth it. I want my time on here to feel enjoyable not like a job, cause I got on of those, but a fun escape. Which at the moment it does not feel like. I still stand by my original premise that if a raid or something new don't come out soon, Destiny may not survive to the releases of comet. Looking at the map I believe there is content that has yet tot be unlocked. So enjoy your game which ever it may be.

                                  • Great post. Totally agree. I fail to see how it would break the game to make Etheric Light more common, or within reach of people who don't have the time to do non-matchmade activities, of which I am one. I have dozens of weapons and armor that I was hoping to upgrade, and now it looks like this will take months, if I'm able to find the time to do it at all. Not good design IMO.

I also have no idea how the house of wolves got really good reviews. I'm thinking about only doing nightfall a until September and giving it another shot if they do disappoint me I'm willing to take a huge loss and get rid of the game. So far for year one it's decent I can only imagine how they are going to keep it up for the next nine years. So until September a lot of zombies are going to die. I would also agree with you on the fact of the speaker exchanging things except bungie fuked up and the speaker can't exchange a single item for me I also had a friend that purchased the house of wolves and it locked him out of the content so thank you bungie.
