Not that you are wrong, but when I was growing up firing bolt actions and breech loaders, I never expected to see the kind of magazines and engineering we see in some of the modern bullpup designs, PDWs or things like the helical-feed mags that Calico uses.
With all the advancement in firearm engineering that I have seen in just the last 20 years alone, I wouldn't rule out anything, even if it makes no sense from a logical perspective....I think of it like Austin Powers time travel....Think about it too much and you'll go crosseyed.
Plus it's a game, so artistic design generally overrides real world mechanics.

I'm more of a function > form kinda guy.

But you don't know the function. Until someone can explain how Glimmer is transformed into the projectile that is fired, or a cross section of said weapon, then you don't truly know the way it functions. Which is why I relate this topic to Austin Powers time travel. It's just a circular argument that will make you crosseyed. All in all, chances are this is because of cost vs man hrs, designing a large number of weapons. They are probably designed just like the ships, with a base model and attachments added to give each a more unique feel. It's fast and cost effective, but leads to some misalignments.

You could be correct with that last part. Though the assumption is backed up by deductive reasoning. Also, Occam's Razor.
