Turtle Beach headsets and their adapters

So, I discovered something interesting tonight. TL;DR at the bottom I was at at Target and I had some Store Credit from some items I returned a while back. Figured I'd finally get around to using it. I put down a pre-order on ESO:TU for the Xbox One as that was my main purpose for going to Target but then I figured I had a bunch of Store Credit left so I'd look around a little bit more. I stumbled across the Turtle Beach XO One Headset for Xbox One. It was about $80 and I decided to compare the features of the XO One to my XO Fours which I currently have. The Ones had two features which my Fours didn't have: Mic Feedback (Hear Yourself over the mic) and Bass Boost. I decided to get them as I really had enjoyed those two features on my Xbox 360 Headset and had been missing having them on my One. I dropped the $80 or so of Store Credit and headed home. When I got home I opened the package up and was disappointed. The Headset itself what dinky and appeared to be poor quality. Barely fit over my ears. Wasn't nearly as comfortable as my Fours. However I noticed the Adapter piece was different. I read the directions and plugged in the new headphones. Bass Boost and Mic Feedback worked great! But would it be worth sacrificing the quality and comfort for these two features? I noticed the button for Bass Boost was on the adapter piece itself and not on an actual part of the Mic. Quickly, the gears in my brain started turning and I wondered what would happen if I plugged my "old" headset into the new adapter. I tired it. Sound worked fine. Said something; Mic Feedback worked great! Click Bass Boost up to the highest setting; BINGO! My sniper rifle let out a thunderous clap as I pulled the trigger. It all works! It's all in the adapter! Take Note: It appears that most of the features of Turtle Beach's headsets have to do with the adapter. Not the mic itself. If you have an XO Four or similar headset and you can get your hands on the adapter for a headset with better features, do it! It will work just fine! Unfortunately, I had to spend $80. At least it was store credit. TL;DR: Turtle Beach headsets (at least for Xbox One) all appear to be relatively the same, but the adapter piece that plugs into your controller is the key to what features it has and are available. My headset didn't have Mic Feedback or Bass Boost. I plugged in a different adapter piece for a different headset that had those features and suddenly my headset has transformed.

 • I use the Turtlebeach XP500s I've had since last gen. Had to buy the chat adapter and the talk back cable to get them to function for chat. I guess its better than having a pair of $250 headphones rendered useless.
