Kill the armor merchant in mejula and wear his armor and leveling will go sooooo fast.

Does the armor merchant sell any armor after Alva armor? And are there any other downsides to killing him?

Well he does sell more armor with time but you can resurrect him afterwards with some souls so there is no real downside to killing him. This goes with all npcs in scholar pf the first sin and once an npc dies there will be nothing there but travel a few times through the bonfire or do some questing stuff and a grave stone will appear where that npc once was.

His armor does give you more souls per kill but I don't recommend killing him early on. After you buy enough souls worth of stuff(I just usually but both armor sets he has and bonfire and buy until he has stock) of items he will start selling boss armor. Not sure but I think if you do kill him his tombstone may appear and you might be able to revive him after some time for souls. To get souls faster just help people with boss fights or farm the Giant Lord with any gear that gives you more souls.
