Here's why you're (still) wrong about matchmaking, Bungie.

Edit: So this was posted pre-HoW. I've since played PoE and still believe optional matchmaking should be available for the higher difficulties. I was originally matched random with 2 people who weren't talking. We beat the level 28 and they sent me an invite. They'd been in a private party chat and so we ran the 32 and beat it. Then they had to log off. If we'd been matchmade for the level 32, there'd have been absolutely no difference. Some may argue that the system worked because we beat the 28 and moved on together, but there's a problem with that. While it was great to run another, if people have to leave or can't run more and no one is on your friends list to run, then you're stuck with no way to progress without having to find randoms on LFG sites or spamming players. Also, if you're attempting a run and one person has to leave, you could also be screwed. There's no reason in that situation to not be able to queue for a third person. There is no more chance of success on lfg sites vs in game matchmaking. The rest of my opinion can be read in my original post below. ------------------------------------------------------------------ I (and many others) have been playing your games since CE. When it was out, friends would come over to play, people would have lan parties and there was always someone to play with. The thing is, almost 15 years later, we're not all care free youth anymore. We have families, jobs, responsibilities and our friends have theirs. The ones who may still get online often have drastically different schedules and so a lot of us play more alone these days. That's a large reason why when the 360 released, it was such a hit. Suddenly as we were getting older and not hanging out with friends as much, there was a way to easily get online and find people to play with and we developed online friendships and relationships. I actually met my wife playing Perfect Dark and I've read threads of others who met their spouses on Live. Pretty much my friends list all came from Perfect Dark, Gears and Halo 3 because they all had really good matchmaking that encouraged communication and being social. Sure there were annoying bastards here and there, but overall it was a great experience. After Halo 3, I got to where with work, etc I didn't really have time to play much anymore. I even went without gold for a few years at one point. Then you teased Destiny. When it released I had a year subscription card to gold, I went and bought a new headset (hadn't used one in probably 4 years). Only thing was, the few friends who still played were all on XBone. No problem though. A few days of Destiny and everyone will have a ton of new friends, right? Here's a post I made of that day in another thread:
Day one. Got out headset and put it on for the first time since Halo 3. Launched destiny, played the first mission and went to the Tower. Silence. Went to the Cosmodrome and saw other Guardians running around. In silence. Went into the Crucible and played a couple matches. Wtf? More silence even in PvP? In a Bungie game ?? Took off headset for the next 6 months.
I get that there are sites like destinyLFG and it's great the community have filled that gap for you, but it's a bandaid and an extra step that shouldn't need to exist. By not including matchmaking because you think only pre-made fireteams capable of clearing content, you're stating that you think most of your community are useless assholes. It's actually sad the contempt you come across with to the average gamer these days. Destiny should be a social game, everything in it should build online relationships and encourage people to learn to work together. Instead it's a sterile, utilitarian and unbelievably antisocial world. I know you increased chat functionality in one of the patches, the problem is that 1) it's an opt in/out function and 2) you already conditioned people to playing without chat. I actually got into a match with a communicating team one day that invited me to a fireteam, from there I sent a couple friend requests and have since run my first raids and experienced that content because another part of your game has matchmaking. That's why it makes it so mind boggling that, if we're willing to take the chance of playing with randoms, that option isn't available to us. We don't need your kid gloves. We don't need to be protected from ourselves. If you feel so strongly that we might run across nasty, stupid or just bad people, why not build in a system to quickly mute and easily vote out of games? Halo 3 had that. How can you not have refined and improved that all these years later? It's time to make Destiny a living breathing world and like any other, there will be good and there will be bad, there will be successes and failures and we'll learn to work together or we'll learn to accept defeat. Through it all, we'll inevitably be better for what we bring to others and they bring to us. If you give us that chance.

      • Destiny came out... pvp players cried that team chat will help improve gameplay and strategy. Bungie adds teamchat and i am yet to hear a single soul talk in over 6 months of play. so why should they care? at least they tried and made prison of elders matchmaking for lv28 allowing players to bond and create fireteams to tackle harder difficulty but trust me nobody will communicate in that mode

        • I didn't meet my wife on halo but apart from that you summed up how I feel. I made so many friends on gears and halo. Eventually party chat killed the social aspect in alot of games. But WHY would bungie implement such a great ingame voice audio if we NEVER get to use it. SOCIAL Space. I'm afraid we're just not dealing with the same great bungie we knew years ago.

          • Whenever I run a matchmade activity, people dont even have mics, let alone speak. This actually holds true across almost every game I've ever played online, barring SnD in CoD, and thats because the trolls and weirdos flock to that gametype (odd, but hey its fun so I guess thats why). Fact is, everyone seems to think that with MM, everyone will magically acquire mics and use them. Last I heard that was what would happen if universal gamechat was added. Funny thing, it didnt. All it did was break party chat on XB1 for about a month. Heres the thing, someone who is willing to go through the oh-so-strenuous task of lifting their phone, leaving a short post on a website and then waiting a few minutes for messages/invites, is also the kind of person willing to utilise their mic. Think of it as a filter for the lazy. With random mm there is no such thing. Only deafening silence. Im not against it being put in. I just feel that those asking for it are expecting too much from the general gaming wilderness.
By not including matchmaking because you think only pre-made fireteams capable of clearing content, you're stating that you think most of your community are useless assholes.
That right there to me and my friends is true. Countless times did me and one friend did matchmaking strikes and weeklies just to get paired with someone who gets 20-40 kills while we get 80-100+. Then to top it off, they get a legendary or exotic drop. Our backs are hurting and we get no compensation. Tonight, we did 4 strikes with one different random each time and what happened? 131 kills - 157 kill - 40 kills. Another strike 8X kills - 7X kills - 12 kills. Another strike 8X kills - 8X kills - 2X kills. We even bailed on a game where we got paired up with a 32 that had a 1940 card score (player carried through the raid) and had an unupgraded Red Death (302), an unupgraded Light of the Abyss (also base), and a rare rocket launcher that was surprisingly unupgraded as well. I did weekly heroic a few days ago by myself and got 112 kills and the other two got like 30 each. When I do match made strikes by myself, I usually get more kills then the two randoms get put together. I'd be better off with optional matchmaking so I can solo it alone rather than soloing it with other people in the game. I think it was Monday when I decided to do Summoning Pits for a bounty. Did I do ROC strike? No, I did the lv12 strike because I didn't want to carry someone and end up with nothing while they get a legendary or exotic drop. What happened in my lv12 strike? I got paired with a lv30 and lv31 that stayed at the start dancing over and over till I got to wave 3 at the door and then they came down. What happened with the boss? I basically dropped him solo as they decided to dance and shoot when they felt like it. In the end I had 112 kills and they had 11 and 12. Personally, I despise randoms and would rather be able to solo everything in this game if I don't have my own friends to play with me. My friends won't even really do match made activities. We have our minds made up that most people are weak sauce. A true optional match making needs to be made but all end game activities such as raids, ToO, and PoE should not have matchmaking ever. It'll just be a huge headache and cause more problems than it will solve.

Completely agree. It a nice to see an adult express his thoughts clearly once in a while... Then I look at this pd33 scrub... Your post is refreshing and you are absolutely right. MATCHMAKING SHOULD BE FOR EVERYTHING BUT ALSO HAVE AN ON/OFF TOGGLE I think bungie didn't put in matchmaking because of how easy their content is... My regular team we can 3 man hard VoG and 4 man hard CE... We bring randos with all the time to help them out and see content. Bungie excluded matchmaking to extend the life of their game so it seems like there is more when it is all an illusion.

Or what if you have 5 friends online at once, including yourself? 3 team up, and the others get screwed. Or 4.., or any other number that is not 3 or 6 :). Optional matchmaking could also help in the instance when you just want to "fill out" your fire team. This needs to be addressed, especially with more and more content coming this way, its just locking more players out of parts of the game. Sigh

                          • I think there should be a region chat like most MMOs but with voice communication. Encourages people to buy mics and make finding raid parties a little easier, because the biggest turn off is no mic.

                          • Weekly heroic matchmaking is a disaster. I've never had even a single moderately decent teammate in an activity that's not even difficult. Now I'm forced to carry kids through the activity, getting 70-80% of the kills myself when before I could solo it in less time with less headaches. And you want to bring that to nightfalls/raids/PoE? No thanks. And please, spare me the 'optional matchmaking' plee. I guarantee that if they do ever bring matchmaking to these activities the next thing that will happen is waves of posts on the forums claiming the activities are too difficult for randomly formed party's of squeakers and geriatrics and the difficulty should be scaled down.

Paired up with noobs Paired up with players with terrible weapons and gear Paired up with afkers Paired up with under levelled players Matchmaking is added in every activities except end game content which is the serious content that does not wish to include casual scrubs.

                                  • The issue is in today's day and age, there is no reason why there shouldn't be optional match making. The only reason they do this is to slow people down from completing it. There is a large number of people who cannot complete the game due to no friends or no match making.
