First, there were compounds. Then, a reaction occurred that caused them to replicate with atmospheric gasses. The compounds that replicated became more numerous and more complex. Eventually, it became complex enough to undergo countless reactions in response to its environment. This collection of molecules that responded to stimuli and could replicate itself was the first bacterium. It was alive, and it is the ancestor of all things that have ever been alive.
