TL;DR, I think they were a touch over balanced before the patch, but they are definitely a little lacking now. Happy medium, go for the middle ground. Note: I've actually been having some success with Hard Light in IB so they aren't far off but unless I get the jump and have perfect aim/recoil control I will lose a fire fight to any exotic pulse rifle or hand cannon, as well as vex.
