There is potentially over 8 billion planets capable of life in our galaxy.
By extrapolating Kepler’s findings, astronomers have come up with some not-altogether-unfounded estimates for these values. For instance, they concluded that about 22% of Sun-like stars has at least one planet we class as potentially habitable. Doing the math based on the latest estimates for the total number of stars in the Milky Way, that gives us a rough figure of 8.8 billion potentially habitable planets in the Milky Way. That’s a lot of rolls of the dice, assuming you believe life has any chance at all of starting spontaneously.
That's just our galaxy people. There's hundreds of billions of galaxies in our universe. That's a lot of potential for life. We're not special snowflakes.

Even if life had a one in a million chance of happening, that means there are at least 8,000 worlds with life on them. 8.8 billion planets? Those are just the ones we know of.

This was written by my friend. There were once 2 men. One was wise and one was a student. Student: ...so that's a lot of life. Wise: Truly is, my friend. Student: 8.8 billion...one galaxy? Wise: Magnificent, isn't it? Student: Hell yeah! Wise: Don't use those words. Student: Sorry. But...there's something else. Wise: What? Student: Are they're aliens? You never answered. Wise: As I said, I can't answer that. Student: Oh. Wise: But I can answer this. Student: What? Wise: If we can ever go there. Student: Well? Wise: Yes, we may. It is very possible. Student: How? Wise: Look here, my friend, at history. We invinted the telescope. Then saw the moon up close. Then we saw planets. Named them, one by one. Mercury, Mars, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn. Then their moons. Phobos, Titan, and many others. Places thought that we could never go. But then we stepped foot on the moon. Evolved that technology to eventually go to Mars. We did the impossible. In an estimated 5,000,000 years. And we have billons of years left. And we already are going to Mars. Student: I get it now. Wise: Let me continue. Student: Sorry. Wise: We may have to go there. From the sun. Global warming. Nuclear energy. Anything is possible. We may not just want to go there, but need to. Student: Do you think there are aliens? Wise: I don't make wild guesses. Student: *sighs* Wise: But if there was to be life, it wouldn't be able to understand us. We would need to understand it, most likely. Whether they are less or more evolved than us, they will definately not be like us. Looks nor communication. Student: Now I'm very curious to go there. Wise: Then let's go.

Edited by dendrox: 4/23/2015 2:55:19 PMThere are obviously extraterrestrials, it's highly highly highly highly unlikely that we are alone in this gigantic universe where we are nothing but an unnoticeable speck. I can not believe that there are still people who believe that there are no extraterrestrials, they must not understand the true scale of the universe. I'll scale it down to something understandable. If you shrink every single star down to the size of an atom, you could probably fill up the entire Earth and still not have enough space. That's just stars, it's estimated that stars have an average of two planets each. Of course they won't all be habitable and all habitable ones won't have life much less intelligent life on our level, but the numbers are still unimaginably gigantic.

Now all we need is a traveler....
-
Theres also about 8 million people dead after your mom rolled over...
-
As vast as our universe is, there's no way we could be alone. I doubt we will ever see them though, as we cannot overcome certain obstacles.
-
Actually there are infinite planets. The Universe is not finite.
-
wherever we find water, we find life.
-
Yes but it'll be YEARS before we get to them planets yet communicate with them. Kinda scary the universe when you think about it. All the theory's and even the facts

Oh really?
-
That's great. When we come in contact with Vulcans let me know.
-
There's potentially 8 billion fûcks i dont give
-
..if we are alone the universe would be just a waste of space.....but we are not I just know it....
-
I wish we could travel to them, what an experience that would be!
-
But how we gonna find them tho?
-
It's a planet
-
Add titan to that list
-
Oh ok. This is an aliens thread. In that case yeah! Of course there are aliens. The problem is they either don't know we're here or are too far away to get to us. I thought at first that it was saying let's go inhabit these planets. I was about to be the wet blanket who points out that we'd never get there.
-
We won't be able to reach those planets tho
-
Sooooooo........ Interstellar?
-
I like you Britton. You really make others think.
-
Let's just go to gielinor
-
Humans, such a self centred species.
-
HELL YEAH SCIENCE
