As someone who holds a doctorate in Linguistics, there is such a thing as "British English" as you say. It is the Standard dialect for a place called Britain. Get yo facts straight, bruh.

  • Google it brah. Granted it was on Romance languages, but I know a lot on English dialects. There is such a thing as Standard English, but it's more of a level than a dialect. I could go into more detail if you want to be difficult?

Now you're changing what you said. Standard English is A dialect, correct. However, you said "It is the standard dialect for a place called Britain", which is nonsense. There is no such thing. "Brah"

  • Are you dumb? Do you know what "standard" means, you're thinking quality; think average. I get paid (too much) to teach this stuff to undergrads, don't try and correct me. Brah.

  • Clearly not as dumb as you. I just did correct you. You may get paid too much, but not as much as me. Teaching is a mug's game.

  • Not stupid enough to brag about my salary on the internet. For a supposedly educated man, you sure like to indulge in childish insults don't you? And you think I'm a squeaker? Don't make me laugh kid.

Your argument fails for one major reason. Standard English refers to whatever form of the language is considered the norm in an English spoken country. Great Britain is comprised of 4 different English speaking countries all of which have vastly different accents and dialects. Perhaps ask for a refund on that doctorate of yours dude

  • I can't be arsed with obnoxious, ignorant children. Read a few articles on dialects. And one more thing, I got paid to do my doctorate, why do I need a refund?

  • Funny how all you can do is call names rather than come up with a valid argument. Have you even finished school or is the whole doctorate thing something you say to try and impress?
pro tip: at least know what you're talking about
• Undergraduate: University of Warwick Masters: University of Warwick PhD: university of cambridge. Dude, I don't need some ignorant kid belittling my achievements because he's read a Wikipedia page on "Dialect". I make 40 k a year because I teach people this stuff and edit people's research. Bro, just stop.

  • Still nothing in the way of a coherent argument I see. Awesome You can make these claims about your educational background or how much money you make but it's all totally unsubstantiated and therefore meaningless. On another note, I dunno what world you live in but where I'm from people in their 30's generally ain't considered kids.

  • Lol whatever man. You're in your 30s and still get off on arguing over something on game forums? Wow. I'm tired of arguing, you have your opinion, I have years worth of knowledge on the subject. Good bye.

  • Not getting of on anything mate. You made a claim that was totally false and were called out on it. You now won't, or more likely can't back up said claim so you've had to result in name calling and making claims of how incredibly amazing you think you are. Personally I'd say that's pretty damn sad. Still, I suppose when you're getting paid an imaginary 40k for a discipline you know nothing about it probably softens the blow a bit ey? Lol

  • Correct me if I'm wrong but you're the one that brought up the academic side of it? As I recall all I said was that there was no such thing as a "british" accent. You're the one that chose to get into dialects and started attempting to Lord you supposed educational prowess over others...

  • Ok let's recap; the British dialect, I.e British English, is a sort of umbrella term which encapsulates of a wide of varieties OF British English- Scouse, Welsh, etc- which also acts as a Standard level of English, a basic framework of English English. British English is a thing. Read a few papers by Peter Trudgill or read his book "Accents of English" if you care that much.

I'll accept that however it doesn't change the fact that it was accents that were being discussed and not dialects(until you brought them up) Even if it were for arguments sake, an umbrella term for a group of dialects is somewhat different from a specific dialect is it not? I wouldn't of thought it needed explained but the original comment was directed at the fact that americans are under the very naive opinion that anyone from Britain has the same accent. You know the one, it's in just about any film/tv show/cartoon ever created by americans that features any character from Britain. The reality is that nobody speaks like that (admittedly nobody may be an exaggeration as it had to come from somewhere) there fore this mythical "british" accent does not exist.

  • Once again deflecting by bringing up something that has no relevance. Look I get it, you didn't bother thinking about what you were commenting on to start with. It's resulted in you not understanding what was actually said to start with and therefore arguing on a tangent. It's cool, everyone makes mistakes even if you don't want to admit it. Have a nice evening

Get yo facts straight, bruh.
He's talking of accents, not dialects. There is no 'British' accent but rather a number of accents that change every 25 miles or so.
