It's actually a hypothetical that pertains to the origin of the universe. If you go back to the point in time that the universe formed, there HAD to be SOMETHING that kickstarted the reaction/Big Bang/whatever. But at the point of universal singularity, conventional physics breaks down considerably, since, in theory, there was nothing before the Universe. "God Particle" is a term for the myriad potential answers that are being explored.
