Word of Crota is really underwhelming. I still would use Fatebringer for the larger magazine size and Firefly, but a Venation III with the right perks can definitely give FB a run for its money.

True, for me though I can't get Fatebringer so I'm running with Word on all 3 of my characters. Of course I was still surprised to find that both Raid hand cannons are matched or outdone by a completely un-leveled Venation III. It just doesn't make any sense to me that Bungie would make what are supposedly some of the hardest weapons in the game to get so weak.

Fatebringer definitely isn't weak. While there are a number of weapons with 331 attack that will do more damage per shot than FB, the mag size and Firefly perk still makes Fatebringer an arguably better weapon. Word of Crota is an entirely different story. I got it after I had already been using FB, and the only time I really run it is when the Nightfall has Void Burn. Really disappointed with WoC.
