Can someone explain why Mickey
joined the URF?
I haven't read more than a basic plot summary, admittedly, but
seeing a friend killed by rebels doesn't seem like a good motivator to join those rebels.
. Not to mention that all evidence seemed to suggest that he enjoyed his position as an ODST

 • Understand that for the vast majority of soldiers in the UNSC, they were born during the Covenant War. They never knew of conflict with other humans. Many of them joined the UNSC to fight the Covenant, not to fight humans. Mickey is one of those people. The Rookie died on an op against the URF. Mickey thought that his death could have been avoided if the UNSC simply let the innies have the sovereignty they want.
