Most of us are blinded by the holiness of RNGsus. But I'm a sceptic and a non-believer, so I have a theory of why YOU wont get a certain weapon, but others will.
Now, we all think that it's all based on RNG, but I don't really think so. I do understand the concept of randomness, but I don't believe that's a fact in this concern.
I am gonna use two examples:
Player 1:
- has Thunderlord and Gjallarhorn
- want Ice Breaker and SUROS
Player 2:
- has SUROS and Ice Breaker
- want Thunderlord and Gjallarhorn
Player 1 and 2 keeps on grinding for their wanted weapons, but usually get random crap drops. And to top that, they get multiple drops of the exotics they already have. (like me, i've gotten 3 No Land Beyond from Crota)
And this is where my theory comes in...
Bungie has a system (fixed RNG), that basicly makes it (nearly) impossible for you to get the weapons you are missing. It's like your profile is assigned to certain weapons. Me, I get SUROS all the time.
So a simple example for this system would be:
"Drops assigned to Player 1: Thunderlord, Gjallarhorn etc" (these are the drops always handed out)
"Drops avoided for Player 1: Ice Breaker, SUROS, etc" ( these are the drops that might never happen)
(same with Player 2,3,4,5,6,7, infinity)
I know there are many RNGsus followers out there, and by all means, praise him! But me, I'm not fooled by this non-sense anymore. Just like anything else, Bungie likes to control the community, so they control RNG as well.
Yeah, I know, Bungie started selling Ice Breaker, which was hard to get for many of us. But that was also their decision. Why do you think it became available shortly after CE? To soothe the masses to keep them playing.
Conclusion: Players will always get the same drops, and will most likely never get that one thing they are missing (in my case Gjallarhorn).
Hope i made sense. I've been thinking about this for a long time, but never been able to put a word to it. Maybe i wasn't able now either... I might be wrong, but I'm sure my points makes it clear enough.
*edit 1*
I see many say they have all Exotics, and asks me to explain that. Well, that's cause Bungie decided that your profile, amongst others, could. That's why.
*edit 2*
*sigh* This wasn't actually meant to be a post about weapons never dropping, cause they can. It's just that it is controlled by Bungie. Sure, some of you have played for 500 hours and finally gotten a certain weapon. But because the community is continously growing, Bungie decides to hand out X amount of, ie, GHs a day, but still manage to control the weapon flow.
*edit 3*
People seem to be believe I'm saying stuff never drops. If it says that somewhere in my post (I've tried to reword myself), that's not what I'm saying. Please, read my post over again, especially "edit 2".
*edit 4*
Well, I expected a lot of flaming since my so called theory is far fatched, flawed and simply crappy :P
I've tried my best to answer most posts I've seen fit. Thankfully most have been serious posts. Some not.
I am now going to get a beer and my whisky bottle, sit down, and play some Strikes. Will check in later to see if this is still alive.
Hopefully I will prove myself wrong and get GH tonight... hrhrhhr

I have been thinking about this recently too. I don't think that people will NEVER get them, but I do believe they have a lower chance of dropping than for someone else.
-
I have got 7 mida's,5 Ice breakers,2 suros,1 ghorn but no hardlight or thunderlord and none of the ps eclusives
-
i have all of them. :)
-
Thats a good theory, i'm saying it's correct or not, but it would make sense for continued play time.
-
I had the same thought as you. My legendary drops only ever seem to be heavies or ARs. Does this mean I'll never get a good scout, sniper or hand cannon. I hope not *sigh* as I don't like ARs particularly.
-
I HAVE NO EXOTICS EXPLAIN THAT!!
-
Everyone has gotten 3 no land beyonds :(
-
Actually makes sense. Good theory but it's just a theory
-
ice breaker has been sold what 4 times now? once before DLC 3 times after? i have 50 exotic shards none have been acquired from xur at least 1/4 came from armor the rest came from ice breaker UR suros plan c. i have 2 gjallarhorns i have the nechrocasm and every exotic that the xbox system has available except no land beyond which i could have bought from xur but choose to not buy it. in fact i do not want it. its all random luck 23 exotics for xbox players you want a gjallarhorn thats a 1 in 23 shot of getting one that doesn't include other drops that maybe available like shards energy coins mol legendary guns rare guns engrams class items..... all those different combos make the odds of getting that 1 weapon (depending on where you're trying to get the exotic from your chances go up or down). lets say nightfall. so 1 in 23 plus coins energy shards engrams legendary guns exotic armor. that makes it what 1 in 60? i am not sure how many legendary guns are in destiny to lazy to look it up so i am using my best guess. but you should get my point. you can do it a max of 3 times or more if you have the free time to delete and remake characters. bungie isn't controlling anything except maybe xur but thats it.
-
Why would bungie say its RNG if it was fixed. Plus fixed RNG doesn't actually make any sense. You can have fixed RANDOM NUMBER GENERATOR. It's random. I couldn't get hard light to drop forever. I got 2 in the same week. It's hard to get the one you want cause you have such a small chance of getting it.. Not cause it's rigged.
-
Didn't bother to read this is because its all a lie I've received every exotic besides the necrochasim through rng that includes 6 suros 3 icebreaker and 6 gjarllhorn and 4 thunderlords statement invalid
-
Not assigned to profile, assigned to character.. Hunter I have never had exotic drops just bounties Titan I have always gets the exotics even for other classes Warlock never gets armour drops of any description. Imagine every weapon having a percentage drop attached to your character: some exotics will have a .05% and others will have .01% That's how I imagine it works, each time you create a character it's assigned a number and within that number you have specific chances of getting certain drops, that's where it's random. Me thinks
-
According to this theory, I am blessed by RNGesus. I have all exotic weapons.
-
Although it seems a little far fetched to me, i do feel like this is the case, day one still no gjallarhorn.
-
After receiving 4 Gjallarhorns while I've read how rare it is to receive, I'm not ready to call your theory junk. Sure, it sounds a bit like a conspiracy theory, but it does make sense. You just read so many instances of players getting the same exotics they already have. I've gotten 4 Gjallarhorns and a few Truths, but never have gotten a Suros, Hard Light, Thunderlord, etc... My buddies continuously get the same ones, but no Gjallarhorn. So yeah, it's a crazy theory, but it kind of makes sense.
-
No, the secret is they secretly know which weapon you want. Then, when you stop wanting that weapon, they'll give it to you to keep you playing.
-
I kind of have a similar theory. I keep the basic mark/bond/hoodie equipped at all times, no shader and as little legendary equipment as possible and I honestly believe drop rates have improved because the game reads your profile or whatever and thinks you need better gear asap. Just try it for the heroic and see if it makes a difference.
-
Thunderlord never dropped for me. Then yesterday I got two of them. So I think this theory is wrong. It's just completely random.

Edited by GUILTYOFWINNING: 2/19/2015 3:52:05 PMI have Suros icebreaker ghorn Thunderlord U upset ?
-
Edited by BLuRR 203: 2/19/2015 1:55:08 PMThere is much truth in what you say...it behooves Bungie to make one or 2 exotic or legendaries that are very popular become VERY VERY RARE for players. If everyone really wants an icebreaker or Gjallarhorn then you're going to keep playing and play often to luck into those if you don't have them yet. Its the reasoning behind everyone having different sets of weapons that drop, but we all have certain exotics that we've had drop like 5 to 6 times while we can't get one single drop of a certain exotic we want. If Gjallarhorn is the weapon you aren't getting to drop, you can be guaranteed its going to be super rare and take forever for your account, while some people have 4 or 5 drop in a month. It was icebreaker for me, I've had 4 Gjallarhorns drop but Icebreaker is the one that after like 500 hours I've still not seen it drop. Had to buy 2 from xur. The RNG is stupid, yeah theres randomness involved but it is not random 100%. They use algorithms to determine who gets what probably based on thousands of different variables related to your character or account.
-
I've gotten a few exotics to drop but I bought most of mine. I got very lucky with gjalli, mida, and plan c; but I've bought everything else or finished an exotic bounty.

I had every exotic on Xbox before dlc and then I got 3/4 of them again from drops not xur when dlc dropped. So now I'm sitting on every exotic and most are 331. The key is a lot of play time. Most of you complain you don't have the guns you want but haven't played very much. Unfortunately it takes a loooong time.
-
Yay conspiracies!!!! If you had a sample size of maybe 1,000 exotics and you had received 200 suros and no gjallarhorn then maybe any of this would have some basis for speculation, but 3 or 4 of the same gun dropping out of a pool of a little more than a dozen is completely meaningless.
-
I understand your theory and I'm also sure that rng isn't random at all. If you get an exotic one time, you can be sure it will drop again and again and again...
-
I will believe in predestined account luck when someone gets a Key of Twilight. Until then, random is random.
