What was up with that alien/human thing that helped the elite in Halo: Nightfall? Made me feel like I was watching Star Wars.

Side-note: I disliked it too :( That is Axl. He is a part of the Yonhet species. The Yonhet belong to the Covenant Fringe. A group of aliens who benefit the Covenant and are ruled by them.

Neither really. His species is a part of the Covenant Fringe. A group of species who didn't pose a threat to the Covenant itself, but aren't large enough or powerful enough to benefit it.

In the lore? No. They made their debut in Issue #11(?) of Escalation. If you're asking whether that was the first humanity's seen of them, no, it's not.
