The Hunt Part II: The target

Link to part one: https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/101800112/0/0 These events took place only a few weeks after the fall of Crota and a couple of months since a team of three other guardians found the Black Garden and destroyed its heart. ‘Kied, Cayde wants to see you.’ Ghost said. ‘Good morning to you to, did he say why.’ I replied. ‘No, maybe he has a weapon for you to find.’ Ghost said. ‘Really does that happen often?’ ‘More often than you would think’ ‘OK, I will head over to the vanguard hall now’ I said. “No he wants to meet you in the bar, curious” the Ghost said. I shrugged my shoulders and left my chambers tugging my cape on as I did so. I was met with a glorious view, The Traveller hanging gracefully over the city centre with the sun rising to its side. Thanks to some golden age science every guardian was greeted with this view when they left their chambers because they all entered the tower from the same door. I walked past some Warlocks discussing the light and a Titan cleaning his rifle, past the crypt-arch who was mumbling something about colour blindness, and walked down into the hanger to the bar. The bar was built by hunters, it was obvious in the design, if the weapons and trophies collected by hunters didn’t give it away than the three giant banners hanging from roof did. The bar was also nearly completely empty, not surprising for six AM, except for two people, the bar tender and Cayde who was sitting in the dark at the back nursing a drink. ‘Cayde.’ I said, ‘Kied.’ he replied looking up at me. He motioned me to sit ‘What’s your poison?’ he asked. ‘It’s a bit early for a drink isn’t it?’ I replied, ‘also I didn’t even know Exo’s could drink.’ ‘We can’ Cayde said ‘for whatever reason our creators made us be affected by ethanol the same way you humans are, but I didn’t call you down here to discuss the mysterious origins of the Exos, I called you here for a mission and you might want to reconsider that drink once you have heard all the details’ ‘I will be fine’ I said. ‘OK but don’t say I didn’t warn you. Are you familiar with The Hunt?’ ‘Yes but only in tales from other hunters’ ‘Good I don’t have to explain much of it to you. This is something that we Hunters only someone once, I need you to hunt a target you know the difficulty of this mission, you know the risks involved before I can tell you the target I need to know if you are in.’ I thought for a moment before arriving on a conclusion, this is who I am. ‘I am in’ I said. ‘Good. Your target is a Cabal legate by the name of Tartor val Crantas. He has taken over command from Valus Ta'aurc, who you and a couple other guardians killed in a strike a few months back. This guy is a hard nut to crack, he fought in the battle for the Twilight Gap and personally killed over fifty guardians including a member of the vanguard, my predecessors predecessor. He was just a centurion then but his ruthlessness and strength on that battlefield and in the battle that followed has secured his rise through the Cabals ranks. We have sent numerous strikes after him, each have ended in failure, every guardian killed. Every time we have sent a raid party after him he either defeats them or escapes long before the party makes their way to him and he has taken up an unusual habit for the Cabal of collecting trophies from the guardians he kills and combining it into his armour. He is cunning and intelligent he knows when to fight and when to withdraw. So I have decided that it is time to change strategy. You are going to find him on mars and then kill him.’ I sat for a while in the old leather couch, digesting what Cayde had said to me. I then asked ‘Do the other vanguard members know of this plan?’ ‘No, it is better to ask for forgiveness than permission’ Cayde replied. ‘OK what about intel, what have we got on his location.’ ‘We know where he is, he is deep within Firebase Rubicon, deeper than any guardian has ever been, where in that base we have no idea.’ Cayde said. ‘You had better leave as soon as you can, I don’t want the others to get wind of this.’ I looked toward the bar and smiled weakly. ‘I think I might have that drink now’ Part III is up: https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/102422131
