Codes were around before, but they tended to stick to their own games ;) and a system like the advance shop is something I still haven't seen replicated in any game (which actually kinda depresses me cus that is a brilliant idea)
I didn't get to play much of OoS, but the story of OoA is still to date one of the best LoZ stories in my opinion and some of the different gameplay mechanics like the rings that change your form into different monsters so certain enemies don't aggro you is just genius.
Don't get me wrong I'm not bashing other zelda titles, heck OoT and MM rank as some of my favourite games, but I think OoT gets FAR too much hype, yes it's one of the best games ever and it helped to shape the future of gaming, but when you really break it down its heavily dumbed down compared to the past zelda games and a lot of the time spent during actual gameplay is increased by waiting mechanics :/ (still a great game though, played every iteration of it)
