Part 13: The Blade Forged in Time
As Matthew watched the projectiles soaring towards him he felt something heaving at his side. Time seemed to slow, and Matthew looked to see Saliks, jumping to shove him aside. Time returned to its normal speed and Matthew was pushed away from danger, meanwhile three of the five Torch Hammer shells the Hydra shot hit Saliks straight on, launching him slouched against a pillar, clutching his side and shoulder.
“Saliks!” Matthew cried, Saliks breathing heavily.
“Don’t worry about me, just get the Vex.” He said in the Fallen language, too weak to remember to speak English.
Matthew nodded, and dragged Saliks behind cover.
“Hang tight.”
Matthew returned to the battlefield that used to be a shrine, the bodies of at least five Dregs on the floor and slumped against the columns, Ether splattered against the stone.
The only things left other than Matthew and the Dregs were a badly injured Minotaur, and the Hydra. Three of the five Dregs left were already badly injured, almost unable to do anything. Matthew tested his shock rifle, but the shock core was too damaged for it to be used. First he and the other Dregs dragged the injured behind columns for cover.
He drew a shock blade both he and Saliks were given before the mission, used for emergencies.
He poked his head out of cover and immediately a glowing purple projectile flew right past his head, feeling the heat of the radiation on his face.
He took a deep breath and rushed out of cover, the two uninjured Dregs drawing the Hydra’s fire, while Matthew charged at the Minotaur. The Minotaur seemed to be going berserk, charging straight at Matthew despite missing its head, the two eyes on its chest glowing with rage.
It raised its arm to attempt to smash at Matthew with its gun hand, but he side-stepped out of the way of its fist, and took the opportunity to slice into the heavy roto joints in its armpit, severing its arm off. With a screech of rage, it attempted to make a haymaker sweep with its other arm, but Matthew quickly braced himself with the shock blade, meeting the Minotaur’s arm midway to Matthew’s head.
The two of them pushed against each other, the living machine not even caring about the blade digging into its arm. Just as Matthew felt himself falter, he ducked out of the way of the metal fist heading his way. He immediately turned around and rose his blade above the Vex with both hands, then brought his shock blade down on its shoulder, cutting through its strange circuitry. It stumbled forward, trying to keep its balance, but it inevitably fell over, and the glow faded from its eyes.
Catching his breath, Matthew heard the torch hammer shells flying his way, and he rolled away just in time. He looked back to where the Dregs were, but one of them was lying on the ground; face first, its charred body barely recognizable. The other was behind a column, clutching its arm.
Seeing he had no backup to cover him, Matthew simply ran at the hydra. It already had scorch marks from the repeated shock pistol shots, but that didn’t stop it from firing at Matthew. He rolled out of the way each by the time it came even close to him. Many of them came within just a few inches of his face.
The closer to the Hydra he got, the less time he had to dodge. One shell came too quickly for him to dodge. As he kept running, he arced his shock blade upwards, the plasma cutting through the torch hammer projectile, the two separate pieces narrowly missing his sides.
The Hydra eventually couldn’t compensate for Matthew’s speed, and its torch hammers couldn’t turn fast enough to shoot at him. With a shout of his Fallen brethren, Matthew lunged at the Hydra, jumping at it, and stabbing it in the eye. The Hydra struggled to pull away from Matthew, but he relentlessly kept going, the plasma blade ripping through the metal.
The Hydra’s Torch hammers and bottom half began to explode, and soon the main body of the Hydra ceased to float, falling to the ground, lights shining through the cracks in its armor. The lights became more prominent, and Matthew began to back away, before the main body of the Hydra exploded, launching Matthew away.
He tucked in his arms and knees to protect him as he rolled along the cold, hard, stone and eventually crashing into one of the columns. His whole body was in pain. He struggled to catch his breath. After what seemed like just a few minutes turned out to be hours of him, slumped against the column and breathing heavily, trying to recover.
He struggled, but managed to bring himself into a kneeling position. The few Dregs still alive watched in awe as the one who just was caught in a giant explosion, rolled along yards of stone, and crashing into a stone pillar, was now pulling himself up.
Saliks followed his lead, pulling himself into a standing position, still clutching his side and shoulder. They both supported each other, limping in unison, heading for the glowing sword in the pillar of light.
As Saliks attempted to make a grab at the sword, the pillar of light singed his fingers. Matthew furrowed his brow, and then he attempted to grab the sword. As his hand touched the pillar, he felt no burning. It actually felt cool to the touch; he immersed his arm in the light, and grabbed the hilt of the sword. As he pulled it out of the pillar, he realized it was lighter than it seemed, no heavier than a shock blade.
Even after the sword was out of the pillar, it was still shining with energy.
“How do we get out now?” Asked the only Dreg that wasn’t injured. Matthew looked to the three Dregs slumped against the columns, one of them already bled out.
“I don’t know…” He said under his breath, in the Fallen language.
Part 13.5: Ignorance is Bliss
“What is it now?” Said the Winter Kell, sitting upon his throne of steel and cloth.
“The ones you asked for have been disposed of.” Said a vandal, kneeling before the Kell.
“How so?”
“They have been sent to the Citadel. Their stealth drives should have died out by the time they even figured out how to get into the lift.”
“Good…”
