I think it's funny that Destiny gets criticism other games don't get. Why isn't there an article about Wolfenstein saying "well, players have played this game for 25 hours and are giving up due to a lack of new content and things to do." Instead, it's "I've put 800 hours into Destiny and I'm tired of playing." Like you can play any game for 800 hours and not get tired of it.....

  • Wolfenstein, along with every other single-player only game, is measured on the merits of its story and experience. Online multiplayer games, which are reliant on maintaining an audience, are measured by their ability to keep their audience engaged. Destiny's notable for its hype, concept, middling critical reception, dedicated fanbase, Bungie's odd approach to fixing things, and its addictive structure. That's why no one can stop talking about it. It's a fascinating gaming artifact, and inside of the game we got, it's relatively easy to see a much better game, yet folks keep grinding because he game's structure demands it to progress. There are a lot of factors, so comparing an online, live game to a canned solo experience doesn't make much sense.

  • Then let's compare it to other online FPS games. How many online FPS games offer anything but standard TDM on the same 6 maps over and over and over? Destiny offers much more than that.

  • All on the same maps over and over. No pve content or end game content at all. Nothing to work towards.

Champaign, zombies, and Exo-survival are your PvE modes. Prestige and Esports are your end-game content. Get out of here.

  • The difference being that the focus is on enjoying playing the game for the sake of playing the game. There are also tons of weapons, perks and visual customization options to unlock, but that's a bonus, not the point. With Destiny, getting those items became the point. And the only way to get those items, in the case of raid weapons and armor, is to literally do the same thing over and over. And saying those are all on the same map is a moot point. You asked for examples of online FPS with more than TDM, and I offered you Advanced Warfare, with a bunch of gametypes, and you focused on the fact that they all take place on the same maps, like every other FPS. I'm talking about new and interesting ways to approach the core mechanics of Destiny.

  • Well I mean, there's the fact that Wolfenstein delivered on what it advertised and was, you know, actually a good game.

  •
Why isn't there an article about Wolfenstein saying "well, players have played this game for 25 hours and are giving up due to a lack of new content and things to do."
Wolfenstein is a single player campaign. It isn't supposed to be a persistent, online world with a major focus on keeping players over incredible periods of times. You might as well ask why people aren't complaining about... Bioshock getting a bit old. They're single player and they have entirely different objectives.

  • The point still stands, though. Destiny as an FPS still offers you more than any other FPS on console yet it gets criticism that other games don't get.

  • I think it's because other FPS's offer a more consistent reward system. You level up, you unlock X gear and X weapon etc. Destiny is largely RNG which more often than not does not hand out rewards equal to effort put in, making the game more frustrating than most other FPS's.

  • It doesn't offer more, it just stretches less out over a longer time. That's the "carrot".

  • So because Destiny doesn't throw up a new unlock every five minutes across the screen with an electric guitar riff to let you know you gained a level it has less content than other FPS games? Right...

  • It has less content than most FPS games currently on the market. It has WAY less content than any MMO/RPG on the market. It's an FPS within gan MMO lite framework. They expect you to play everyday, for an extended period of time. The game is built to have a long play life. They cheaped out on the content. Defend it all you want, but the fact remains that they artificially prolonged the life of an online shooter by constantly moving goalposts back a few yards at a time and won't fix any bugs/glitches that allows the player to get ahead. This point is exacerbated by the fact that they aggressively patch nerfs and exploits and any weapon buff instantly means a tenfold nerf on a handful of others. All they had to do was buff pulse rifles. What was the point of nerfing the autos? Again? For like the third time? They nerfed them multiple times before, and what happened? PEOPLE STILL USE THEM BECAUSE THEY LIKE AUTOS. I hate pulse rifles, I have no use for them, I don't care how much they buff them, I don't want them. Stop acting like people are being entitled for wanting what the company promised. We were lied to and we're still being lied to, and now interest is really starting to fall off. Good for you though, stick it out, be the last man standing, just do Bungie a favour and get the lights on your way out. "Last one out, get the lights..." I wonder if you know that reference.

  • Name a single FPS game that has more content than Destiny. You claim "all" but you have nothing to back that up.. Just because you're tired of Destiny's content and want new content doesn't mean a 6 hour dudebro action shooting game with a repetitive online TDM has more content.

  • It took me weeks of playing just to finish the Halo games on Legendary. I never finished Borderlands due to the overwhelming amount of stuff going on. Metro 2033, Portal, Half Life 2. Basically all of them. ~signed Everyone~ It took me an afternoon to blow through Destinys story. Since then it has been the same missions over, and over. And over. And over.

  • Portal might've been a bit of a stretch. But when you consider the co-op campaign, it was a lot of fun and took a while to get through everything. Borderlands. Yes. More guns, more stuff to do.

Borderlands may take a little longer to do everything, but you can beat every single mission in Borderlands in about 25 hours. So no, those do not have more content. I don't know if you know this, but the story missions in Destiny are just the beginning. I'm sorry that you never got to Raid or experience end game content at all.

Uhhhh, did you inspect my gear and guns? You don't get any of that stuff from a vendor, I assure you. I've done my fair share of raiding. You said name one that has more content, I named about 4 that have at least as much and one that exceeds destiny directly on its own ground, Borderlands. Those were designed to be straight up FPS's. They are designed to be played through once or twice and that's it. Destiny is built the same way, only they TELL you it's designed to be played for ten years. You finish everything the first day, like the aforementioned FPS's, then you come back the next day AND PERFORM ALL THE SAME CONTENT IN A DIFFERENT ORDER. There isn't more content, they just keep giving you the same stuff to do. I have literally had the same patrol mission drop for me, from the same faction member, not twice, not three times, but FOUR TIMES IN A ROW. Go and kill the servitor. Okay, now run back and kill the servitor. Didn't you do it right? kill the -blam!-ing servitor. What??GET BACK THERE AND KILL THE -blam!-ING SERVITOR! And the "story?" They tied that garbage bag up with a nice little drawstring didn't they? There is nothing to build on because the story is nonsense. I see now why Joe Staten left. After activision left most of the narrative on the cutting room floor, he couldn't in good conscience stick around. I don't blame him. And exactly WHEN are they going to build onto this "story"? The dark below was crap piled on crap. I'll reserve judgement on HoW until it drops, but given Bungies track record so far, I expect more of the same, i.e. Nothing. Unless you've power leveled your toons, you're just a "tad" behind me and many others who echo my sentiments with regards to hours played. I've been with this mess since the beta, and while I see its potential, it maddens me that Bungie continues handling it in the manner they have been. It deserves better and so do we.

  • None of those games have more content than Destiny. The only thing you can do to prolong the life of those games is to play them over and over. Destiny offers you much more than that.

  • Destiny offers you the same thing, that's my point. You play through it once, then you continue to play through over and over. How hard would it be to at least write up some new bounties?

  •
The point still stands, though. -
It doesn't though, friend. That's my point. Destiny is trying to accomplish something entirely different from the game you mentioned. Therefore it is judged by the standards it has set for itself. There's a reason we don't still compare games like Destiny to The Legend of Zelda from the NES, after all.
