Why aren't YOU using Shotguns in PVE?
Do share, why don't you use them? And I'd rather have more specific reason than "I don't like them" (which is a valid reason ofcourse), because I'm curious why don't you like them.

I do. Every time one of my buddies needs help carrying through a friend in VoG Normal, I almost exclusively use the shotgun. Except for the Templar and Atheon of course.

Since the premise of this game is really about the balance of DPS and survival, most people are not jumping in killing everything with shotgun since shotgun does not provide the most DPS. Since we have really OP weapons like ice breaker, it becomes an unconscious decision of the best mix of DPS and survival hence why ice breaker is so coveted. We then have Ghorn where you could go in and just shoot rockets from far or close and kill everything. Given better substitutes and the innate desire to utilize the most efficient method in beating a boss/strike/mission, we'd all tend towards the strong weapons. If you want to have fun or mess around or find niche uses for shotguns in PVE raids etc. then by all means.

To me its simple. Range. Why use a shotgun when you can use a fusion or a sniper rifle to better effect? Why do you think found verdict is the bomb when it comes to shottys in the crucible? Range. Try using a shotgun in nightfall PvE with lightswitch on and your buddy uses a fusion rifle in the same circumstance and see who will die less. Kwesdog

Simple piss poor range and in nightfalls you would be an idiot to charge the enemy with one.

I prefer to keep my enemies at a distance, so I usually have a sniper rifle. Sometimes I use a fusion rifle because it's got a bit more punch and a bit more range than shotguns. The range part is really the kicker.

1 ReplyLet's take a Praetorian for example. From the CE shotgun Swordbreaker, it takes around 4-5 shots to kill a Praetorian at point blank. By the time I get close to killing one, the Praetorian has already gotten off 2 melee's and I'm dead. However, with the shotgun buff coming Praetorians are, in a matter of terms, screwed so far up the ass they might as well no spawn in.

I use the Ambush scope on my Sniper Rifles and one-shot most things.

I use them in PvP because I'm awful. I don't use them in PvE because I prefer the Fusion Rifle.

Not enough stun and short range. Any non basic enemy will still likely melee you despite being shot in the face point blank. Against bosses you have to be nearly to actually in their 1 hit melee range. I do occasionally use them when I'm bored and even against bosses like the archon priest, which I might add is pretty fun. Sniper crit DPS from range is just a better option.

They suck in pve. A fusion rifle can do what a shotgun does but better, and at a farther range. This balance patch won't change the fact that shotguns won't be used on anything with angry, lightswitch, or both.

Unless I'm screwing around, it's too risky to charge into a group of enemies when I could just be picking them off with a sniper or fusion rifle. I have been using invective though and it's a lot of fun. But I die a lot more with it than non shotguns.

I'd prefer not to have to be up close and personal to enemies to use a [i]gun[/i]. That's what [i]melee[/i] is for.

4 RepliesI do, they're fantastic! Nothing out DPS's a full auto shotgun with field scout, 2800 damage per shell, three shells a second, you can out DPS a Gjallarhorn! I have a full auto Judgment with void damage and a 7 round mag, it eats Praetorians, 2 seconds max. Invective is great too! Just make sure your shotgun is full-auto, its vital to your DPS.
