Halo was based off of books from the early 70's and mid 80's. The titles are Ringworld by Larry Niven, and Armor by John Steakley.

So because it's not a video game, it automatically counts as a completely original concept? Okay, then how about games like Unreal? Or Quake? Both are FPS. There are aliens that need destroyed before they destroy earth. Sounds like a pretty similar game in comparison to Halo. Halo was based on books, and has many similarities to the other precursor games. So again, not original.
