Seperation of church and state. Marriage is a religious ceremony and you can't force religions to accept people under the first amendment. Call it a civil union which is the same thing but not religious.

Marraige=Religion Civil Union=Secular. Simple and applies to all, not a specific group.

Why not just let everyone get married? If we adopt your model, what happens if someone converts religions, or stops being religious? Does their marriage status change?
