Gamespot Article, for those who missed it

A lot of the info isn't new, but I found this gem in the first few paragraphs, it explains how players are matched together in the world of Destiny:
Destiny is constantly talking to its servers to see if there are other people out there playing the same mission or simply navigating the same geography as you. When it finds a good match, it combines each of these players into a single shared experience. Bungie insists there's no co-op lobby, no "waiting for player to join" pop-up, none of that--it's intended to be very seamless in the way it has players running into each other out of the blue. Bungie wants you to feel like these are "chance encounters" where you can forge a lasting alliance, or just go your separate ways once you've collected your loot after a successful mission (more on that in a bit).
• Sweet! I like how each gaming site is getting more or less the same information with a little extra tidbit thrown in.

I'm not a huge fan of MMOs. I don't have the time to meet up and plan "raids" with people over the internet. School and work make that very difficult. So all of the information concerning the social aspects of Destiny has been extremely pleasing.

So it's basically like Fable 2 and Fable 3's sorta multiplayer, but instead of gamer picture orbs its the players character.

        • Can I disable this by an options menu if I want to be a hermit? I can't imagine being one of several hundreds walking into a place and them all popping up next to me. What sort of scale are we talking here? What will determine who appears in my game ('my game' being the one I see)? Will it essentially be like Halo's matchmaking system in pairing me up with a limited number of randoms in the area, if each area acted like a matchmaking playlist?

          • Don't you mean "Gamespot" and not "Gamestop"?
Our goal is that every time a player sits down to play Destiny, they have a different experience from the last time. [This] led us to create emergent activities, rare activities, time-limited activities. So you get distracted from doing the thing you wanted to doing something you didn't expect.
Awesome! Thanks for posting!

          • This clears up a lot about the shared world idea now. Thanks.
